If you're someone who craves a well crafted, expertly executed, and yet not pretentious food and drink experience then run, don't walk to Rock and Rye Tavern. From the perfectly lit tavern room, to the polished stone bar, the atmosphere sets the tone for what is always a pleasurable experience.
The cocktails are not your average well swill, they are well thought out, often historically researched, and always executed divinely. The sublime and unique flavors of these classic cocktails are expertly coaxed from a perfect combination of house made syrups, garnishes, and liquors chosen not only for type, but also for their specific ability to offset and highlight the subtle flavor profiles of each other. Here the cocktail has been restored to its rightful place as an art. If beer is more your taste, you will still be pleased. The beer selection while not as extensive as some, is well rounded, often mostly local and always surprising and delicious. From the varying selection of bottles, to the seasonal offerings on tap, or perhaps most exciting, the handcrafted and freshly tapped cask ales, any craft beer lover will rejoice.
Ready for something to eat? Rock and Rye will delight you again with a seasonally influenced and locally sourced (as much as possible) menu which has something for everyone. Whether you are in the mood for the more traditional, such as a locally raised beef burger or steak accompanied by hand cut french fries or onion rings, or you would prefer something with a lighter flavor such as a delicate fish in a light and refreshing broth, you will always leave happy.
In response to an earlier reviewer's opinion of the Caesar Salad as merely average I find it necessary to say that unlike the majority of restaurants today, the Chef at Rock and Rye actually makes a classic Caesar salad and dressing, from scratch, with all the traditional ingredients that give the Caesar it's allure. If someone found Rock and Rye's Caesar to be average, then I can only assume they were taught that the exemplar of the Caesar would come out of a bag, with a packet of corn syrup laden dressing and have no resemblance to a true Caesar excepting that they both contain lettuce!!
On top of an amazing location, expertly crafted drinks and fantastic food, the people here are friendly, knowledgable, and always helpful.
Going out for dinner or drinks at Rock and Rye is like stepping back in time to your local speakeasy where everyone knows your name, your drink and your pleasure..... with no password necessary.

so, i've been to rock and rye a couple times with friends since i moved to NY from Mississippi. The food is great, and i like that they do their best to use local ingredients whenever possible. the beer selection isn't as extensive as i would have liked, as they tend to focus more on warmer, heavier brews than i enjoy; they have alot of IPAs and stouts, whereas i prefer weissbier and pils... however, the staff is always friendly, and the food more than makes up for the beer selection. the bartender is likewise awesome, and she makes some pretty awesome cocktails. and she's always trying out new things, so definitely a place to check in often!

I love cool, old mixed drinks. This place should be top for me.
The drinks were reasonably interesting, well-made, but you are pay $8-$10 for a tiny glass with your fancy drink.
Okay, I understand (mostly). This way, at least, I can try a bunch of different cocktails.
But when I wait for someone to take my drink order for 10-15 minutes, then you know you're in deep.
We had two entrees, one VERY good (scallops), one pretty average (salmon). Appetizers: one EXCELLENT (portabellos), one average (Caesar salad).
I'm not sure what the end vote for the food is, since it varied so much, but I do know that the service was very, very slow, and that stunk.

Admittedly, I'd been to Rock n Rye before tonight. Despite the realm of places to grab a bite or a drink in New Paltz -- from high-end, highly marketed venues, to awesome, inexpensive Main Street joints–no place compares to Rock n Rye. It's a stand-out. The "off the map" locale (maybe half mile from main strip)..an ancient, refurbished inn, provides comfort and warmth, and reason enough to go. The menu changes, based on what's produced locally fresh, seasonal, and tasty. The food is always glorious, from teasers to entrees. Shame on any establishment that doesn't focus with equal level of creativity and intellect in their mixes. We pay the same of more for far less attention paid. When I go out to eat on my own (solo), I don't expect much. But, sitting at the bar at Rock n' Rye, I encounter people from all over the world, as well as smartest locals. Nothing pretentious or uncomfortable. The staff is tightly crafted, and they are definitely part of the experience.
I consider Rock n' Rye a "secret place" If you are looking for the spot where "in the know" locales go (including lots of celebs in area who want to stay off the map), this is the only place to consider.

We eat out often, and love to cook. R&R does good food well. Creative combinations of well prepared food. They use locally sourced ingredients, combine them effectively to bring layers of flavor to each dish, and the preparations are well though out - balanced and flavorful. great cocktails, and a reasonaby priced wine list fill out the menu. For those that think it is overpriced, it is certainly worth the price.. Not cheap, but not high end either - especially the wine list. Our only complaint, and it is MINOR, was that the high praise brought a full house and the staff was a little too busy on Saturday night. Its a pretty place, and the bar is a good place to wait, so we didn't mind.
