This is not a huge museum but it is very fine. The permanent collection ranges from Egyptian to medieval to contemporary. A substantial overview of Western art, primarily but it did include some Asian art as well. The extended labels were very interesting and added immeasurably to the experience. There is also a good small restaurant on the premises with the quirky decorative feature of dozens of photographs of dogs. The dining room had a display of paintings of dogs by a local artist. Overall, very impressed and had a wonderful time.
Founded as art gallery for U. of Rochester. Fine America collection from 18th to 21st century. Also good sampling of other cultures and eras on second floor. Well worth a visit when in Rochester. Easy parking, beautiful neighborhood.
Nice Art Gallery! It flows fairly easy. Some Cool peices. Took about 2 hours too walk through. They also had a garage sale going on in the other side of the building so that was a nice surprise.
Big museums can be exhausting, so we especially love these smaller museums associated with colleges/universities. One gets a good overview of the history of art, and discovers some real gems that may be overlooked in a huge museum. The Memorial has an interesting and diverse collection. It was also nice to see groups of children and teens on tours and participating in activities, making this museum an integral part of the surrounding community.
Rent the guided tour, for additional information. I am not schooled I the arts and found this helppful
This gallery was way more impressive than I initially expected it to be. The collection included some quite famous artists. A lot of art by women which is unusual in most art galleries!
