Fantastic day out - sighted and swam with 4 whale sharks, saw dugongs, turtles and an abundance of colourful fish and coral. The tour was exceptionally well run from time of pickup at our accommodation, transfer to the boat, abundance of good food and informative and positive staff made our day so enjoyable and memorable. Great experience and highly recommend this tour.

Thank Lorna V

Hard working staff made our day seamless chatty friendly and well informed about the area and the whale sharks. Alternative to less competent swimmers and made the day full of fun as well as an awesome experience well worth a visit

At precisely 7:10 on March 13th, a bus arrived to pick us up at our resort to take us on the Whale Shark swim. Our guides were on the bus, the driver and the “entertainment” as Ken introduced himself. We picked up all of the remaining passengers and then headed out to the site. On route to the site, our guides provided us with a commentary of the history of Exmouth, the wildlife and the landmarks we drove past.

We were greeted on the pier/jetty by our deckhand and she ferried us to the boat using a Zodiac. Two trips were made where we boarded the boat with our Captain Brad at the helm.

The boat is large and in our case we had 15 people on the tour. One can go to the bow where one can get an excellent view or on top and have a chance to chat with the captain. Listen to the captain and crew and the trip is most enjoyable. There is a toilet onboard and it is more than adequate. There are plenty of places to sit and areas with tubs to store your equipment or items you have brought onboard. I did not take my DSLR camera as I was not sure of the condition or size of the boat and I will say, the camera would have been very well protected and safe from the salt water while on the boat.

Water, both hot and cold, is provided along with a snack, lunch, etc. One will not leave hungry.

Fins and masks are provided however, we travel with our own as I have prescription lenses plus I use a snorkel that has a protective valve in it. They provided sunscreen and a spray bottle of baby shampoo mixture for the snorkel masks. Fresh water with a disinfectant was provided for the final rinse when we finished our water activities.

First stop was to get acquainted with the snorkeling equipment in the water. We were given a fair chunk of time to do so and it was most appreciated as we were taken to an area where the coral is abundant as are the fish. I found it most distracting to having people swimming like mad to and fro when if one wishes, they could just “float” and the sea life seemed to be just as entertained with us as we were with them. It also provided one with the opportunity to really experience this wonderful site. We were also at this time given instructions on how to be ready to get into the water and prepare ourselves for the whale swim. HINT: When one actually goes into the water for the swim, do not follow the guide too far because they will take the “baton” from the other group already in the water and then we follow the guide once the hand-off has taken place. We are given instructions as to where the shark is coming from and to be ready. If one follows the guide too far, one has to turn around and swim like mad to catch the whale shark so do not go towards the shark and then pass the shark only having to then turn around and play catch up. Just listen closely and do as one is told. These guides know their craft well.

Next we were off to the Whale Shark location. This is in the blue water. We were split into two groups as we were a smaller tour and the boat was only half full. Group one prepared by getting their equipment on and to be ready to “step into the ocean”. Once they were in the water, group 2 was prepped and ready for their turn. We had to be ready to go when signaled.

The guide from the first group will stop their group but the guide will then continue swimming to hand off to the guide of the next group. The guide will then return to their stopped group and wait for the boat to come and pick them up. Group two will take up swimming with the whale shark until they too are told to stop. The Zodiac follows the swimmers while they are in the water and keeps an eye on the swimmers so there is always a “safety net” as required.

Note there is a restriction to how close one can be and the guide will be monitoring you closely. If you get too close, you will be tapped on the shoulder by the guide and instructed to give more room to the shark. We need to respect this privilege and to listen to our guides.

We were lucky as there was only one other boat so between the two boats we were only allowed to swim with the whale shark for one hour. There was only one whale shark that we had seen. If there would have been 12 boats, then those 12 boats would have had to share the one hour between them all with the one whale shark if I understood this process correctly.

Once we had our time with the whale shark, a “youngster” about 5 metres long, we headed out for an area on the reef with calmer seas and had lunch. After lunch we were given more time to just snorkel and again, it was phenomenal as we were not rushed and the sea life was abundant. It was so perfect to just let the current gently take you and just drift.

I found safety a high priority as well with Ningaloo Blue Dive. They kept an eye on their “charges” and upon boarding the boat each time, row call was always taken to ensure everyone was onboard. The safety Zodiac was quick to respond when required. One is well taken care of. I very much appreciate their professionalism to ensure the safety of the whale shark and to ensure we followed the requirements for swimming with the whale sharks. We never felt rushed and they made the trip memorable.

There is a professional video photographer onboard that takes a wonderful video of the experience and of the crew and passengers onboard. I would strongly suggest one purchase the video. She also provided photos that if one wished to have, could be obtained in high definition. We also ordered some of the photos and we were not disappointed. Vee from bluemedia provided the photography and videography. She took wonderful photos and video that captured and preserved the special memories of the event for us.

In my opinion, this is an experience of a lifetime and I very much appreciate the professionalism and experience of Ningaloo Blue Dive team, Brad, Ken, Liana, Dani, our videographer, Vee. If we return to Exmouth again, we will definitely be using this tour company again.

Visited Exmouth in late March and joined the Tour for viewing of Whale Sharks. The tour was complete, well run, and very efficient once the fish were spotted. They managed several trips for viewing, and we managed to see 3 separate juveniles while out for the day. All ammenities were included, and a must do is to include "V" as the videographer. Our personalised video was well worth the incremental. A must do
