“Middle-class hotel.”
Reviewed 15 December 2011

As in the tittle – hotel was middle class. The price was quite high comparing with conditions, but this is New York, right? Room is quite small, but it has everything you want. Bed is very big, there’s TV, free Wi-Fi, safe and coffee machine. It was more or less clean. Bathroom was generally also clean, but shower seemed like was never touched by a cleaner.
There was a free breakfast in the hotel. Few muffins, cornflakes, milk, coffee and tea. So nothing special.
The neighborhood is OK, I felt safe, when coming back to the hotel in 10 or 11 p.m. The closest metro station is c.a. 10 minutes away.

I arrived at night. My room had no heat or working lights except a bedside lamp. I told the front desk who sent a maintenance man. He changed the lightbulbs - when that didn't work he shrugged and said he couldn't do anything else. He said the window mounted heater was working. We could hear the motor but no heat was coming out. Another shrug and he left. It was freezing. I tried to sleep wearing all my clothes including coat. Front desk would not let me change rooms. Hallway floor, carpet in room filthy with urine smell. Maybe good thing there were no lights in the bathroom so I couldn't see. Too awful, had to leave in the middle of the night. It is not value for money to stay in a cold, dark and dirty room with staff that just don't care.

We just got back from a four-night trip to NYC and stayed at the HoJo Express in Woodside while we were there. Our prime reason for picking this location was price - we paid less for four nights than we would have paid for two nights anyplace in Manhattan.

We arrived at noon, three hours before check-in, hoping they could hold our luggage for a few hours, and were very pleased that they let us in our room that early. The room was clean, ours had a microwave and small fridge, small desk/table with chair, armoire with TV, and a small open closet area. We just had one king bed in the room and there was plenty of open space for us to set our suitcases down and live out of them without them being in the way. The bathroom had standard amenities, but only two towel sets, which was fine for us. There was a very basic continental breakfast, coffee, juice from a machine, two kinds of cereal, and a few muffins and danish in the lobby area. The staff was very polite and helpful with the few questions we asked them. The room was cleaned to our satisfaction daily.

The immediate area is not quiet. The hotel is on a busy street, across from a gas station and fire department. We were in the front of the building above the lobby and there was noise from time to time. The noise does subside somewhat at night but never completely. This was not really a problem for us but may be something that others may need to consider. The 61st/Woodside subway station was about a ten minute walk for us from the hotel to the subway platform. Turn on 65th when you see it, it's much faster than walking all the way to 61st.

There are businesses of every kind within a couple blocks of the subway station - food markets, restaurants of all kinds, two laundromats, Dunkin' Donuts, a couple of bars, pizza by the slice, hair salons, etc. A couple of the places we liked were Metro Kitchen for breakfast, the Dugout Irish bar for a beer ($5.25 per pint) and the pizza by the slice place across the street when we headed back for the night. There are several places you can pick up fruit to supplement the breakfast at the hotel, at pretty reasonable prices.

Transportation costs: Cab from LaGuardia at 11:30 on a Wednesday was $19 plus tip. Cab to LaGuardia at 11:00 on a Sunday was $13 plus tip. The seven-day unlimited metro card was $29 per person. This was a great value for us, we used the subway not only to get to Manhattan, but also to get to different places once we got there. There are only eight parking spaces available and we only saw one time where there were any open spaces. Neighborhood parking also appears to be at a premium, fortunately for us this was not something we needed to consider for this trip.

We would definitely recommend this as a good place to stay for a trip to NYC!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back if you're a light sleeper, or bring ear plugs! The parking lot is in...

We read reviews for this hotel and decided that it was an acceptable risk to make a reservation. Manhattan prices were more than we were willing to pay so this hotel was the right price. Our room was not great. Beds and bedding were worn and looked old, the nonsmoking room was musty smelling. We came back to our room at 7:00 pm one day and they were just cleaning our room. We had to sit in the small dirty lobby for 30 minutes until they were done. The walk to the subway was a brisk 10 minute walk, through aresidential and quiet business area. This line took us straight to Times Square without switching trains, very convenient. We never felt unsafe walking at night to or from hotel/subway. Not much in the way of a breakfast and no where to eat it. Overall, if you don't mind an old, not so clean room and a lot cheaper price than Manhattan, then try this hotel. Next time I think we'll go somewhere else.

Good location to stay outside of Manhattan for the price. This is a no frills hotel that is about a five minute walk to the train and is about a 20 minute ride into Manhattan. A very basic breakfast is free in the mornings consisting of coffee, orange juice, muffins and Danish. We found a little store on the way to the train that sold grab and go fruit plates which worked out nicely. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel but we were told it takes a lot longer to get into the city that way. The one con about the location was that if you wanted to get changed from being in the city all day to go out in the evening the train ride back to the hotel during rush hour is over the top crowded.
We were there in the summer, the a/c worked but seemed to only have one setting, VERY COLD. Some rooms have microwaves and dorm fridges (ours did not). We were there for almost two weeks and having those items would have been a nice convenience. There is limited free parking behind the hotel which we were able to secure but there is also on street parking if you are unable to find a space in the lot. The neighborhood was safe, no problems walking back from the train at all hours and it is a 20-30 minute drive to JFK. For the budget traveler this is a decent alternative.

Room Tip: King size beds seemed not to have fridge and microwaves if you want these opt for the smaller bed op...

My boyfriend and two of our friends stayed at the hotel for 10 nights and it was a good experience. I really don't have anything special to object to. Actually, all I can think of are good things about the hotel. Towels were changed everday, the light in the bathroom was fixed the day after it stopped working, breakfast wasn't much (juice, muffins, cornflakes, tea and coffee to go - but more than enough to get you through the ride to the city and some real breakfast :)). My boyfriend said the location could have been better. We needed to take a 15 minute walk to the subway and from there it took us some 15 minutes to get to Times Square, for example. However, I liked the walk, enjoying my coffee on the way. There was no noise within the hotel, some coming from the street since it is on Queens Boulevard but that's to be expected. Yes, the heating system was a bit loud during the night and it blew hot air loudly then stopped, so that was a bit annoying and something to object to. And one more thing I liked a lot - we left our luggage in the hotel's storage room after checking out until late in the afternoon, free of charge. So there you go. Hope it helped. The hotel itself is not much in terms of decoration but you can count on good value for money. Have fun!

It’s easy to get to this hotel from JFK airport, through the Airtran Jamaica station and then the train in direction to Penn station. The Hotel location is close to the 61 St. Woodside train station (7). This station connects you to the second main subway stations in NYC, which is 42 scd. Grand Central Terminal and 42 st. Time Square Station. It’s 10-15 minutes on walking distance . It also has a few bus stops but we never used them. It was the first time for us staying in a New York hotel; we choose it for the price and the amenities. Housekeeping was daily, the staff was nice, and the night shift staff was polite and confident; also they have a small room available to put our belongings in case you do check out and you flight departs late that time. We did not use it because we found a ride before, but that would have been our second option.
The room was limited in space. It had just enough for one person to pass around, our luggage occupied any extra space. But thank God it wasn’t damp or had bad smell. Our room included an iron, and a blow dryer.
What I would like to suggest you include in the service is a small refrigerator because we can’t take anything inside nothing because it will get warm. I also, recommend they put some signs close to the street and or in the train station, because we get lost trying walking back. My friend called the hotel asking if they can explain to us how to get back, and the only answer I got was "I cant explain it to you, you have to ask around how to find the place" and when we finally got to the hotel (after a 40 min walk!!) the front desk (sorry I cant get the name of the person) agent, made us the check inn, but never made eye contact with us, he was talking on his cell phone.
