“Very nice timeshare in a beautiful resort.”
Reviewed 21 May 2012

After several years of trying, we were able to swap into Chetola (only 38 timeshares). Check-in was a breeze with no delay and very friendly, helpful people at the desk. They provided info sheets about the resort, attractions, hiking trails and the town of Blowing Rock

The grounds were mature and absolutely immaculate. The hybrid rhododendrons were at full bloom in the resort and town. After moving into the unit, we made a run into town (1/2 mile from the resort gate) just as a wedding was starting at the resort’s lake. Coming around the lake was a pair of white horses pulling a Cinderella type carriage with the bride and father on their way to the groom….made for a memorable start to the week!

We were in Dogwood 4 which is listed as a Deluxe 2 bedroom unit and was upstairs. Being on a hillside, there was one flight of stairs to the upstairs unit and one flight to the 1st floor unit. The kitchen, dining area, 2nd bedroom and bath were on one level with the den, master bedroom, balcony, and glassed in Jacuzzi room on a level down just one step. The unit overlooked the resort lake.

The unit was very large and well furnished including a wet bar. The kitchen had granite countertops and was well equipped. Everything was clean with the exception of a stain on a den chair and a little crusted food on one of the upholstered counter stools in the kitchen. There was a flat panel TV (26-32 inch with 40+ channels) and DVD in the den and a 13 inch in the master bedroom; none in the 2nd bedroom…….TV was not a priority in such a beautiful location as Chetola and Blowing Rock! WiFI was free and generally good although at times speed was slow or it was slow to connect. Shutting power off and restarting the router a couple of times after storms seemed to help. I did not hear any noise from adjacent units. I did wonder about what our downstairs neighbor may have hear as I noticed several squeaks in our floors, as well some movement when my 200+ pound brother walked about the unit. A problem with the drapes was responded to quickly by maintenance.

There were few resort activities at this time of year but plenty of attractions nearby. These included the Blue Ridge Parkway with entrances just 2 miles away and overlooks nearby which provided some spectacular vistas. Moses Cone Park is accessible by a trail from the resort and has 15-20 miles of trails as well as Bass Lake which has a 1 mile trail around it which was very popular. Grandfather Mountain is about 15 miles with Linville Falls (which has fairly easy trails to overlooks of the 2 tiered falls) being about 10 miles further. Linn Cove Viaduct, an engineering feat to complete the Blue Ridge Parkway, is also nearby. There are many waterfalls nearby with directions available in a pamphlet from the visitor’s center in town.

Blowing Rock is a small mountain town that has charm, shops, galleries and many well rated restaurants (if you want fast food, go to Boone). In addition, the Moses Cone Mansion has very nice art and craft shop featuring many local craftsmen. Blowing Rock has Art in the Park, which is a jury selected arts and crafts fair, monthly from May to October. Based on the one in May, the jury makes excellent selections.

My wife and I have decided we will jump on another chance to revisit Chetola. If you enjoy the eastern mountain scenery and arts and crafts, Chetola would make a good base to explore.

Probably worth the extra money to have a lake-facing view with balcony as it is a very pleasant view and place to sit. Room and bath felt a bit cramped, but clean, if not a bit dated. The restaurant was closed for renovations, but breakfast is offered in a makeshift dining area. Good food, friendly (perhaps overly) staff. Although a shuttle to town is offered for access to restaurants, it was pouring rain when we were there and we would have preferred to dine in, so the place will be enhanced once the restaurant is finished. My only complaint is that I thought the hotel hallways and common areas smelled "funny" - maybe institutional, like a hospital ward. Not very inviting. Free parking is nice and location is close to cute downtown, but far enough away for quiet, are plusses. Think I'd go for a condo stay next time.

This two-day trip was a gift for our honeymoon. We were excited just to get away and spend some time together in the mountains. Luckily for us we don't have a problem finding our own way around town, because there was nothing of interest to us to do at this resort.

We checked in around 9pm, and were greeted by a guest who was nice enough but not at all helpful. He didn't tell us a room number, how to get to our room, anything about breakfast/dining, what to expect...he simply slid a folded piece of paper to us and went about his business.

The room was standard - it was a suite, so that was nice, but the decor was incredibly outdated. The bed slept as though the mattress hadn't been changed since 1990, my husband (on our second night of marriage) had to get up a sleep on the couch. The shower took a literal 12 minutes to get to a temperature I could bear to stand under. There is a water stain on the ceiling of the bedroom, and obvious stains on the comforter. There was, however, a beautiful view out of our room (300).

The breakfast was nothing special, and I had the pleasure of overhearing the cook's conversation about how he didn't like his hourly wages and schedule all throughout the meal.

We visited the spa for a massage and that was hands down the best experience at this resort. For one hour nothing else in the world mattered. They provided the best customer service we had seen at the resort, and were kind and concerned.

Perhaps this review sounds harsh, but I work in hospitality and am familiar with a different standard of service.

I won't be back to this resort, but the towns of Blowing Rock and Boone are charming and shouldn't be missed!

This hotel has everything you need when traveling with a family. Large rooms, comfortable beds, best "free" breakfast I've ever eaten! There is plenty of open green space for kids to run. Fishing is available, although we didn't have time to take advantage of that. Very pleasant staff, great location just outside downtown Blowing Rock.

We were in Blowing Rock on a cold, windy day, looking for a place to stay and came across the Chetola Resort when were were searching on our GPS. It was a pretty good find!

Our room was clean, comfortable and cozy, and nicely decorated with Timberlake-style furniture. I guess that stuff will never go out of style, and it suits the feel of this place. Our room appeared to be an ADA room, as the bathroom had extra shower fittings, handles and grab bars. The beds, while not the pillow-top style now found in many hotels in this price range, were quite comfortable. A flat-screen on a console, instead of a 27" TV in the armoire would have made the room seem more updated, but overall, it was quite adequate for the night we spent.

A complimentary breakfast buffet was offered with the room. It was impressive, maybe even one of the best I've seen. They had an "omelet bar", as well as waffles, potatoes, bacon and sausage, fresh fruit, yogurt, and a large selection of breads, coffee, tea and juices. It was quite satisfying, and far better than about 99% of the hotels I've stayed in that offer a breakfast with the room.

Great time for families....we have 4 teenagers and they love this place...lots to do, close to Blowing Rock restuarants and shops. This is a MUST stay place...once you stay here you will never stay anywhere else in mountains...We chose to stay here year after year...FYI the 4 bedroom townhouses are amazing! Comforts of home with Fabulous views!

Room Tip: Can't go wrong with one of the condos!

My wife and I where married at the chetola in april of 2002. 10 years later we wanted to go back to where our wonderful love story began. From the intial phone call all the way to the cleaning staff sending us the articles of clothing we forgot when we left we could not have been more pleased. I would definitely pay for a lake facing room, the views of the lake and mountains are spectacular, and the extra money is minimal. They offer a shuttle to downtown Blowing Rock, and go the extra effort to make sure their guests are happy. Also included in the price of your room is a great breakfast... made to order omelets, fresh waffles and many other food selections. Chetola is a great place to stay and is continuing to improve, we will definitely be back before another 10 years!
