This ranks as one of my most favorite excursions, especially if someone is coming to Western North Carolina for the very first time. No matter what age, this is a wonderful and relaxing trip. I recommend the Nantahala Gorge excursion and the "open car". The open car has seats and gives you a better view - plus experiencing the wonderful mountain air is part of the fabulous trip. I have been on this trip dozens of times, taking first-timers, and I never get tired of the experience. No matter what time of the year, Spring, Summer, Fall and yes even in the Winter - no trip is the same. Everyone has told me that they had doubts about taking a train ride but were so glad that they did as they all enjoyed the trip. I suggest you pack your own lunch and when the train stops at the Nantahala River at the Outdoor Center you can sit by the river on one of the picnic tables and enjoy a nice relaxing time. Get your tickets in advance - especially during the fall leaf season and don't be late - the train will leave without you!

My husband is a major train buff , always talking about wanting to take a train trip . We have taken many train trips throughout the US and Europe . He has wanted to take the GSMR for sometime , we finally took it today . It was GREAT from beginning to end . Our "hostess" Katie in first class was wonderful!!! The lunch was very good as was the wine we had . Enjoyed being in first class , but also liked the open air car in the rear of the train . The experience far outweighed my expectations .
Highly recommend.

Thank-you for riding with GSMR and providing your review! We always enjoy having passengers that embrace the railroad spirit just as much as we do! Hope to see you on the rails again soon! ALL Aboard!!!

The food on the train was very good. The servers in the car were friendly and checked in often to be sure we didn't need anything. Enjoyed the scenery as we ate dinner. It was dark on the way back so harder to see things. Several went to the open air car and said it was nice. Wine selections were nicely paired with the food. Would have suggested to have more wine per course. Overall a nice experience and worth the trip.

This was our second year riding the train from Bryson City and it was just as great as the first. The hosts on the train were informative, nice, and took care of us while on the trip. This is great fun and starts from a small beautiful town.

You can't go wrong

Just returned from our Anniversary vacation that included spending 4 days of overindulging on the many offerings of the Bryson City NC area.
For many years we've tried to include a riding the rails in our anniversary trips and
the GSM was enjoyed very much. We had been looking forward to this for a while and were not dissapointed.
A great way to spend a day. If available we most always chose the open air cars.
Watching the rafters on the Natahala river from the train inspired us to drive down scenic 19 the next day for a closer look...
We enjoyed the many displays in the museum that included engines/cars from most every railroad in the US including the C&A from many years ago.
If you like railroads, you will enjoy the GSM...

Check it out, you'll be glad ya did.
