I will say to start that this course is beautiful, with Mt. Mitchell in the background. I called the night before and the club staff found a time where I could play by myself on a Saturday morning.. That is not normal for most courses, but I was playing and my wife was riding, just didn't want to be joined up with anyone this time. They accommodated my request. The course was WET, but that isn't something they could control, there were multiple days of major T-storms before I played. As with any course the first time you play it's a little rough getting around, but I would gladly go back! I will say I am not sure the Sat rate of $65 was "worth" it but I was on a trip so I didn't care this time, but I still thought it was a bit high..
This continues to be a favorite course for us with its bent green fairways and greens. It is in good shape this year and they are working on it to make it even nice. Teeing off around noon, we were delighted with the pace of play. Just note that this is a cart path only course so there is a “bit” of walking to and from the cart. Luckily most of the course is in a high valley along the South Toe River that winds its way through the course. The water comes into play on several holes where on others you just hear the rush of the stream. Plus to add some variety, there are a few mountain holes along the way. The front nine starts out with wide open fairways and parallel fairways. Giving the impression of an easy course. But then water crosses the fairway on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9 adding to the challenge of each of these holes. The back nine starts with No. 10 perched on a hillside with a high elevated green. If you don’t get the second shot on the green, be prepared for to get your heart rate up climbing up to make a shot. No. 11 is exciting as this par-3 looks to be ALL downhill. More challenge awaits on No. 14 a par-4 where the river is wider and passes in front of the green. Course management is critical here. Then No. 15 a par-3 has the river coming into play again, so be or your toes or be wet. To us the last three holes are like “Amen Corner” beginning with a long par-5, then to No. 17 with a wide fairway but a partial peninsula green cut into the hillside, with the finale being from the top of a hill to a downward sloping fairway with the river crossing before the green. Putting was a real challenge for us on this visit. The putts were slow and difficult to read. Always a great course! A friendly staff at the Pro Shop.
I know you have played the course a number of times. It is great to know you still enjoy playing here. Your picture of #11 is fantastic. Thanks for the nice review.
family has been playing here for years and it never gets old. We are always renting our mountain property to people and groups who want to come play here
Our group (28) has been coming to MM for about 10 years or so. I have to say it is my favorite weekend of the year Love the course and the scenery. Looking forward to August as our main group will be celebrating over 30 years of the greatest game ever. Thanks to Jim and his guys for making it a great weekend.
We drove all over the place--great views, beautiful homes, fall colors. The streams are showing evidence of the continuing drought!
Played here Labor Day weekend w 3 friends. Good condition, nice layout, and a really fun place. Play moved smoothly and quickly. Nestled into the surrounding landscape exceptionally well, and saw several deer. I recommend. No driving range, so you don't need to arrive too early for your tee time!
