This is a perfect outing for young kids or inexperienced riders. Jeff is patient and the horses are well-behaved. We took 3 girls ages 9, 6 and 5. Our 5 year old was hesitant and decided to walk along side. The girls wouldn't let us ride with them but the water was warm and we walked the beach. The day was picture perfect and we had a great time.

We booked this special day as a treat for our two young girls (ages 3&4). We met Jeff and his wife and son at the beach entrance directly across from the graveyard of the Atlantic museum. The beach is gorgeous with very few people and lots of shells. The horses are very well cared for and gentle and sweet. My girls loved every minute of the horse ride and we made some special memories!! There is a porta potty at the entrance to the beach that was clean. You can book via email, or phone. And pay by cash or chq...don't forget the apples and carrots for the horses!!

We have two little horse loving girls. when they saw the horses being unloaded off the trailer and they looked just like the toy horses they love so much it was so very special!! The rides are done on the cape
Hatteras beach. You meet at the #55 parking lot across from the graveyard of the Atlantic museum. The beach is gorgeous and only a few fisherman are around. The girls got to ride for a full hour and then got to feed the horses right on the beach. The horses are beautiful! You can tell that the owners take very good care of the animals. The rides are done in the morning starting at 8:00am and they also offer evening rides. Bring some apples and carrots as a tip for the horses!! You can pay using cash or chq, but no cards. Thank you Scholten family for a great day and memories that will last a lifetime!!!

I've always been terrified of riding horses since I was very young, but decided it was high time I conquered my fear. Shadow, so calm and gentle, was like my personal "people whisperer" for the morning and took me on the most carefree, ride. Jeff and Suzie are so wonderful and easygoing that it was like chatting w/ old friends while strolling on the beach. My daughter has always wanted to do this and we can't thank you enough for such an amazing experience. We rode early in the morning before the summer heat set in. It was so lovely to close my eyes and feel the breeze, listen to the surf and feel so confidant (Shadow is very good at his "job") - this is an experience I won't soon forget. We already can't wait to come back and do it again and again. THANK YOU Jeff and Suzie (and Shadow and Gus)!!! See you next year...

I called and spoke to the owner before leaving for our vacation. I reiterated 3 times that the people who would be riding were my wife, daughter and granddaughter. I.E. THREE people. At no time was I told that only 2 horses would be brought to the meeting spot. At no time was I told that only cash or check would be accepted. Thankfully my wife had enough cash with her. After going on more than one site, after the fact, I found those two stipulations spelled out. Neither on the main web site. Had to go into FAQ's to find these. As it turned out my wife, because she wanted our daughter and granddaughter to experience the ride, chose to walk along while the others rode...not at all what we planned. It took over 2 hours to get to the location from our rental home in Duck and, needless to say, they were very annoyed as was I that Jeff never bothered to tell me that only 2 horses would be brought as I believe he figured that I'd not gone to his location (he would have been right) if he did tell me. So, if you have more than 2 people planning to ride, go elsewhere. This was not an oversight in my opinion as I mentioned that 3 people would be riding on 3 separate occasions during our phone conversation.
On a positive note, the "ride" was enjoyable especially for our granddaughter (she is 10). Even she didn't appreciate that she was only allowed to proceed at a walk. The horses proceed at a walk only and with accompaniment by the owners at all times walking along with you. If your looking for a real horseback ride, this isn't for you. The experience for a non-horseman or youngster less than 10 would be most appropriate. On a second positive note, ask to have pictures taken. The person who took the pictures was not only very talented as she took really professional angles but also quite pleasant and friendly. Do yourself a favor and ask for the picture package which gets you a c.d. of many pictures some in black and white and most in color. She does a beautiful job. Oh yes, the price is ONLY $30.00 for the pictures. Well worth it!
