“Magical time, with a couple of exceptions”
Reviewed 31 January 2011

Stayed a week over Christmas in one of the condo/town-homes. Our unit was furnished in an 80s motif, but was clean and modestly furnished with most of what we needed.

Due to the sloping terrain, some buildings require several steps up/down to the units (ours had 30+ steps), which would not have been too much of a problem, but we were graced with a very white Christmas of 8 inches of snow. The scenery made all the more special. The problem was there was no shovel for clearing a good footing out of the unit for our elderly parents.

One other disappointment, we were teased with a large functional fireplace. Unfortunately, there was a sign prohibiting its use due to rules by the association.

All that said, the area was beautiful, the unit clean, and kudos to the municipality that kept the mountain roads clear for driving between Asheville proper.

We chose Foxrun because if was close to Asheville and was part of a golf resort. The condo was fine with plenty of room and everything was in good shape and clean. The resort is part of another, larger resort called Rumbling Bald which had a lot of amenities which were available to us. We went in Nov. because we wanted to see the color at time of year and it was fabulous. The golf courses were great and located right in the mountains. We were treated very well by everyone there and Asheville had some great places including the Biltmore House and the Grove Park Inn. The mountain roads to and from Asheville and curvy and you have to drive very carefully but the scenery is great. I've never seen such bright colors. Since we were there the first week of Nov. some of the amenities were closed for the season, but thata was no problem for us as the golf courses stay open all year. The whole trip was great and we would gladly do it again.

This review is of the Fox Run Townhouses, within the Rumbling Bald Mountain Resort. This was an RCI exchange, and was one of the nicer exchanges we've had. We were lucky enough to be assigned a unit overlooking the lake and the surrounding mountains, but be aware that most of the units overlook woods (and lots of deer). The unit was spacious and clean, but the furniture is old and the kitchen minimally equipped. You'll want to stop at the Ingles supermarket just south of the lake on Rt. 9 on your way to check in, as it is a 15 minute drive away on very windy roads. Ingles is brand new, and very nice. I recommend taking the sightseeing tour around the lake, to further understand the area - it's very enjoyable. The on-site restaurant - Lakeview - is mediocre but convenient. The casual food bar at the Bald Mountain golf course - Legends - has good pizza and other food. La Strada - a restaurant on the lake - was also quite mediocre, but some people raved about the pizza. Golf was good: the Apple Valley course (part of the resort) was excellent, and the other resort course, Bald Mountain, was good - and both were reasonably priced. Another great nearby course was called Cleghorn Plantation, near Rutherfordton.

The people who run this place are heinous. On our last day, we asked for a late checkout. They gave us an extra 30 minutes. Come the original checkout time, they began calling us telling us we had to leave. Granted, we were a little slow, but they called every five minutes to harass us.

This ruined the memory of the trip. They have no concept of customer service. They are total, complete jerks. The rooms were dirty. It was a bad experience.

Avoid these people and their nasty customer "service". They're creeps.

This was our 4th trip to this resort. On our first trip, we fell in love and have returned year after year. If you enjoy golf, nature, hiking, scenic drives, and leisuely days on the lake, this place s for you! This resort is quite isolated and you will have to drive to get anywhere you want to go...but oh, what a drive! Beautiful mountains, blossoming laurels, rocky foaming rivers! The town of Chimney Rock is a short drive away with quaint shops and Chimney Rock state park. Hike to the bottom of Hickory Nut Falls and play in the waterfall there. Then take the elevator up to the "rock" and get an ice cream cone at the cafe as you sit at the overlook with a fabulous view of Lake Lure. Some great day trips include the Biltmore Estate near Ashville, Grandfather Mountain, and hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway. Transylvania County boasts the most waterfalls around. Another great day trip is Dupont State Park and 3 falls that are grouped together...Hooker Falls, Triple Falls, and High Falls. Plan to take a picnic, plenty of water, and your bathing suit so you can swin at the base of the falls! The hike to the falls is easy to moderate and just over a mile total. The units which are either duplexes or stand alone are in the midst of updates. Last year we came back to find new living room furniture and decks. The appliances do need updating as does the decor. But seriously, I am not here for what is inside this place. Fox Den units have 3 decks...two on the upper level on either side of the main living area and one off the master suite downstairs. We ALWAYS see deer as we enjoy our coffee on the deck each morning. Fox Run units have one deck upstairs and one down. Free WiFi is available at the Legends cafe at the golf course and I think there is dial up in the units. There is an Ingles grocery store in the town of Lake Lure about a 15 min. drive away, so you can buy groceries there instead of packing them with you. Be sure and sign up for a discount card to get the best prices. There are only two restaurants on the resort, Legends offers sandwiches and pizzas and the Lake View Restaurant offers a Prime Rib buffet on Wednesday nights with views of Lake Lure. There are also a couple of nice places in the town of Lake Lure. The resort has a nice little beach, horse shoes, croquet, and basketball at no fee. For a small fee there is mini golf and tennis. There is an indoor pool as well as an outdoor pool with a lazy river. Take a towel, there is a fee if you don't. You can also rent kayaks, canoes, and pontoon boats. They also offer an evening lake tour, which we highly recommend, which lasts about 2hrs and gives you interesting information about the lake as well as a nice boat ride. It's only around $15 ea. Lake Lure was rated one of the top ten most scenic lakes in the world by Natoinal Geographic. If you love the mountains, you will love this place!

I read some of the reviews of this resort prior to leaving and I must say that had I believed them and cancelled my trip to this resort I would have missed out. The units were clean, well appointed, updated and looked to be well cared for. the only drawback to the whole trip was that unless you are a golfer, you pretty much have to drive to anywhere that you want to go. the scenery is picturesque, the resort tranquil, and other than being virtually out in the middle of nowhere the whole experience was one that I would repeat. the only drawback is that there was no wifi available. If you can't do without being connected at the resort for any length of time and don't wish to use dial up then maybe this isn't for you.
I would heartily recommend if you are staying in the area that you don't miss out on eating dinner at the point of view restaurant. although it doesn't look like much from the outside, the meals were fantastic and the service top notch
