Whilst Wusong Island gets great reviews, it can be hit and miss as you will see. For a better and far more convenient look at rime (wusong), go about 10 -15km's north along the Songhua river (just past all the newly developed housing) and you will see it it in all its glory, and without the pain of a 2 hour drive! Absolutely beautiful and definitely worth trying to see!

I went there in Dec. 2016 in cold winter and was really fortunate to be able to see it. Claimed to be one of the four wonders in China, it is rare because it is caused by warm water (4-5 deg. C) discharged daily into the river from the hydroelectric station upstream. Some conditions have to be met for the rime scenery to appear: under -21 deg. C (it was -24 deg. C when I went), slightly windy conditions and early in the morning. Reached the island at 09:30 and it was really beautiful but the rime scenery lost much of its whiteness by 10:00 as the sun rose. The whiteness is caused by powdery snow (not ice) that condenses from the mist, easily blown away by strong wind or vaporized by sunlight. A must-see in Jilin in winter.

A few words about photographing in very cold weather. First buy the local snow boots, double-layer gloves, head and neck wear, heat-bags for body and for shoes; these may not look pretty and they are cheap and most effective in temperatures below -25 degrees C. Second, you need snow-grips for your boots (rubber put-ons with some metal studs) to avoid slipping on ice. Even with snow-grips, do not walk on ground patches with transparency (white or dirty is ok, but not transparent ice). Walk slowly like a penguin. Third, your camera (battery) may last only a few shots unless you keep it really warm. I put my small camera inside my jumper when not in use but it is still not too effective. Found a way to wrap a narrow shoe-heat-bag around my camera (EX-100). The inner glove liners of the double-layer winter gloves (under RMB 140) that I got locally was a real winner. They are absolutely flexible and warm so I just wear them when shooting. Neither do I need to cut some holes to push my finger tips out for camera operation in icy cold weather. The winter items (boots, gloves, etc.) that I brought there were found to be useless in such cold weather.

Wusong famous for its " Frozen Rime" .. only happen in Dec - Feb... the mist from the river frozen in the bare trees and formed crystal like leaflets that will disappear as the sun rises. Need to get up at 5am to take a short ferry ride to the island to view it. Really, really cold and mobile & camera batteries drained completed within 30 mins... so come prepared.

one of China's natural wonders. You have to see the way the snow hangs on the trees. It is amazing. I missed the carved ice show but I saw the set up. I think this will be great. Beautiful walks.

As you might aware the rime phenomena only occurs when weather condition permit. I think is a 60-40 chance. We depart from 5.30AM and it took around 1 hour with some snowfall. I paid a taxi from Jilin downtown for 280RMB (return trip) after much haggling with the driver(student advantage!) the day before. my driver is : 军哥18686584746 (good person but expect no english) We paid for return trip because we were told it is hard to catch taxi there. Give the driver exact time you will be back and do not pay him first! There is another 60RMB for the ticket to the island and the boat. The main attraction is a lone tree in the middle of the island with many Chinese tourist around it. Definitely wait for them to disperse and you'll have the place all to yourself. Unfortunately when i came there is no rime to be found, with -15 C temp. Definitely DO NOT GO if the weather is OVERCAST with NO SUN and the temperature isn't lower than -10 C because the steam from the river won't rise to the trees and became ice crystal on the branches. You won't get the photo like on the internet. 1-2 hours is enough, otherwise it is really freezing. There is nothing else on the island, it is just a barren landscape feel other than the rime. Don't go to the toilet, it is nasty and unmaintained.
