All that this camp site is missing is the barbed wire fence and a 5 meter exclusion zone around it's perimeter! The terms and conditions on the website do not go into anywhere near enough detail.......if your looking for a friendly experience I suggest you book a week when the owner is away.......never have I seen such an egotistical tyrant! He talks to the visitors and staff in exactly the same way...."Stop that, don't do this" and god forbid if you try and wash your wellies in the outside tap provided......there were a variety of signs appearing over the weekend to protect his beloved decking......for goodness sake, this is a camp site, not a prize winning show garden!
We should have known better as the first sign you meet on arrival is not a "Welcome to Mitchums.....please report to reception"...oh no....you are greeted with "All new arrivals and visitors MUST report to reception" with the MUST in capitals and underlined. This was our first taste of how the weekend would progress! Don't get me wrong....if you want somewhere with immaculate decking, grass like a bowling green and toilets so clean you could probably eat off them (although if you tried, there would be a sign put up afterwards so you didn't try it again)....then this is the place for you. You will, however, have to be immaculately presented, obviously leave your muddy wellies at the gate and ignore the way the owner treats his staff. We overheard him talking to a lovely lady working there and quite frankly I wouldn't talk to a dog the way he spoke. You get the impression that the lovely, welcoming staff are even nicer to try and compensate for this man's rudeness. Quite frankly, I begrudge the thought that the money I paid for this weekend has gone into the pockets of such a man and next year all our group will be going elsewhere for Oceanfest ((whoops, forgot to mention you are not allowed to book groups either, so make sure you and your mates don't camp next to each other or talk to each other whilst on site, or you'll be off!).....and one more thing....it is mentioned in the T & C's but never experienced it before......don't bring a tent you can stand up in...you will have to take it down and "rent" one of his little two man tents....so be warned. Just one positive that may come out of this.....by next year I wouldn't be surprised if this guy has got a rain exclusion zone over his site to protect his decking further, in which case that would have proved handy on this wet and windy weekend!!!

I would like to add that the above slating of this campsite does NOT (capitals and underlined!!!) reflect in any way to the staff working on the site. They were all lovely, extremely helpful and quite frankly far too nice to work for such a dictator who deserves to be running a thrid world uprising rather than a campsite! I can only think that any of the decent reviews of this site MUST (capitals and underlined again) have been while the owner was away

Room Tip: I haven't rated the service as this would be misleading....for all the staff, especially the couple of young lads and the lady there it would have been an "Excellent" and quite frankly they all deserve medals for putting up with him but unfortunately this brilliant service was cancelled out by the owner.

The report to reception for new arrivals and visitors is a general request on most campsites, this is for the safety of those people already staying with regard to belongings and children. The tap you are refering to is used for filling drinking water containers, I am sure those people wishing to use it for its intended purpose, probably want to do so with out the addition of mud.

The grass, decking and shower blocks are kept immaculate because generally our customers prefer to stay at a campsite with these standards. Those people wishing to mistreat the campsite and therfore spoiling others enjoyment, would be best staying at other campsites where the showers are filthy and security does not exist.

Everyone booking at the campsite are asked to read the terms and conditions and therfore avoid dissaponitment with regard to how they wish to conduct themselves. As the saying goes one mans meat is another mans poison.

We live locally and regularly camp in Croyde. Whilst the site is OK is poor in comparison with others around. You are made to feel like you are in a prison at this site with so many rules and good luck to you if you step out of line!!! The staff are so rude and obnoxious. Also the town location makes it hard if you want to hire boards and go surfing. If you are looking for a fun, laid back camping experience check out Ruda. So much better, we would never ever go back to Mitchums and are distgusted that such people own a site in Devon.

Everyone staying at Mitchums are aware of the site rules for everyones enjoyment. When women shower in the mens block A this is unfair on the men and B how easy is it would be for the women to say that they have been assaulted! So for everyones safety these women were told to leave the mens showers!! This is a busy weekend as it is The Gold Coast festival all campers are aware of this when booking.

I've never been treated so disrespectfully as a customer before! We were treated like naughty teenagers, despite being 30-35yr old professionals on a quiet weekend away. We seemed to be suffering the brunt of experiences they'd had with a previous group who had caused problems, but it was extremely unprofessional. The leading lady, Faye, flew off the handle, at length, and was really unpleasant. She is in grave need of customer service training!

Would not go back!

Yet another group that were loud and abnoxious at 2.00am in the morning we have a quiet after 11 pm rule (which they are aware of before staying) as this is a mixed site and not everyone wants to party untill the early hours!! We sugest that groups go down to the beach to party and come back quietly on to site. This group however were unable to respect other people camping couples and families who did not want to be disturbed in the earlier hours. So unfortunately they were told to keep the noise down.
Its seems that more groups are having problems with abiding by the site rules (so that everyone can enjoy their stay) the less likely we are going to except them. It is such a shame as the majority of groups are great.

I’ve been staying in Croyde since 1985 . My girlfriend and I have been staying at the beach site every summer for the last 6 years and it’s a cracking place. In that time , we've stayed about 50 nights !

The view over the bay is second to none ( hopefully Trip Advisor will put my photos up ) and the showers and toilets are spotless and cleaned around the clock. My GF says the ladies 'powder room' is great , with mirrors and sockets for hairdryers / frighteners etc .

The pitches are not huge , but the website makes it abundantly clear that you can only get a small 2/3 person tent on . This does make for a nice atmosphere and meeting people, but if we want to keep ourselves to ourselves then we just stick a windbreak up.

There is some room for small ( VW ) sized campers , but nothing any bigger . Don’t turn up in a 6 berth Winnabago , converted bus or with a 6 foot frame tent .

The site is perfect for surfers with a decent outdoor wetsuit shower , plus board and suit hire onsite at a decent price and only a couple of minutes walk to the beach , either down an old slipway and the rocks at low tide , or down the main path by the surf school.

Bear in mind this is a QUIET site for GROWN UPS . If you want to p!ss about or play games and loud music , then this isn't the place for you ( Again ,the website makes it all pretty clear )

Knowing just how magic this place is , It’s a bit disheartending to see a couple of people on here having a right old moan , when it seems to me that all they needed to do was read the simple and perfectly reasonable rules and stick to them . The staff are all really friendly and helpful and the owner , Guy , is a lovely bloke - a proper old school gent .

He loves his well-manicured grass and the reference to the ‘£5 charge’ for turning round is just an attempt to stop idiots who can’t read from driving in and then tearing it up when trying to turn around. Would you want strangers turning round on your front garden ?

There is a turning point just 20 yards further along Moor Lane and the sign it crystal clear. We normally have the pitch at the front by the fence and it’s amazing just how stupid and rude people can be when they are simply asked to revrese back out and drive another 20 yards to turn round.

In summary , we utterly LOVE this site and will continue to come here for peace , quiet and to see Guy and the rest of the team .

Breakfast at Baggy's surf lodge , or a cream tea at Sandleigh Tea Rooms just down the lane is a winner ... Oh and the sunsets from the dunes or Baggy Point and STUNNING! Village shops and pubs are about a 10 mins walk , but the Ruda shop is open in the day for essentials. There is a decent sized Tesco in Braunton.

Like I said , if you want to party , generally mess about and create noise then maybe Ruda is for you. Us ? We just want a few quiet beers and a decent kip after s days surfing , so If you did that next to my pitch , I'd me minded to march round to remind you of the rules as well , and probably not as politely and Guy or his team would ...

See you in 2012!

Cheers ! xxx

Room Tip: A nice mature QUIET site for GROWN UP.
