Today I got to visit Old Salem with my daughter’s 3rd grade class. It was so worth the cost! The staff were in character, engaging for the students, let them be a part of the creating and taught them so much about science and life long ago. It was an amazing day!

Excellent area. Beautiful artisan shops and demonstrations. Quaint, historical architecture situated in the shadow of the modern steel high rises in the background. Highly recommend. Ideal for a quick day trip as it is a small, limited area.

Interesting historical old settlement. Pretty grounds, well maintained. Advise to be sure and eat at the Tavern.

We had limited time to visit here, and started out with lunch at the tavern restaurant, which I highly recommend.  After lunch, we walked through Old Salem to take in as much as time would allow.  Some historic buildings have free entry, the majority require a ticket to enter.  We purchased 3, 2 home visits tickets at the bookstore a few blocks away from the tavern restaurant.  I believe the tickets were $18 a piece.

Old Salem is a beautiful, historic area that has all the charm of historic Williamsburg, Va. without the over whelming time commitment required by Williamsburg.  Even though we visited 2 ticketed houses, visited as many free houses as possible, and spent a considerable amount of time in the Moravian cemetery, we did not feel drained and ready for a nap.

The Moravian history of the area is fascinating, and make sure you avail yourself to the pottery house and the bakery which show case the Moravian artistry.  Moravians were master potters, and we enjoyed learning about their techniques.  The sweet bread at the bakery was to die for as were any of the cookie selections.  If you have small children, they will be very much entertained by the staff at the bakery who provide a hands on demonstration of bread making complete with a working oven fired by wood.

We found the Moravian cemetery to be amazing and akin to seeing the American cemetery in Normandy France.  Perfectly square head stones lined up endlessly along manicured lawns.  Very dramatic effect.

We loved our visit.  Wish we could have explored more.  If you have no issues walking about, you can easily see the best of this area in 2 hours or so.  We would definitely go back.

We arrived late in the afternoon and, sadly, did not have a lot of time to spend so we bought a two museum pass - it was good for two days which is a great idea though we couldn't stay. Visited the gunsmith and the joiners workshop. Such welcoming people! Thanks to Ben at the joiners workshop for spending so much time with us! This was not our first trip - went with my late brother multiple times. This was the first time without him so it was bittersweet. I look forward to our next visit.
