Alert Bay is remote and the town is small. The excellent U'mista Cultural Centre is a big draw. Amenities are somewhat scarce and the town closes down early. So when the owner of the Lodge said they offered dinner for an additional cost that was the deciding factor in booking our group of six. The Lodge, in a converted home, has 4 rooms and a very pleasant great room where meals are served. The large light-filled room is completely conducive to relaxing with a book or glass of whatever you are pouring. Bring your own or visit the liquor store in town. The grocery store doesn't sell alcohol. In town, which is to say the shops along the harbor, in addition to the grocery store there is a drug store, gift store, pub and sandwich shop as well as a couple of other accommodations.

The owner of the Lodge is generally off sight and this season, it is being managed by a lovely young couple who we thoroughly enjoyed. They were very cheerful and accommodating, preparing meals on our schedule and offering a ride when needed. The rooms were adequate and fine for our stay. It was homey, kept very clean and well-located. We were so pleased to enjoy Alert Bay Lodge as our base.

Room Tip: Room #4 is the largest room.

Alert Bay Lodge is a humble and unassuming bed and breakfast where we stayed as part of our grizzly bear tour in Knight Inlet.

From arrival the hosts, Joel and Estelle, were attentive, professional and very keen to keep us as comfortable as possible during our stay. We enjoyed breakfast with them and the evening meals they prepared were equally delicious, especially considering Joel were new to the cooking scene - clearly a talented young chef who could branch out in the future. They even prepared us a pancake breakfast on the morning of our very early departure as a 'take away'!

We couldn't have asked for a better time at the lodge itself, it's just a shame the weather was not particularly predictable and we ended up having one very rainy day!

Some tips before you go: bring toiletries etc, bring layers to keep warm, bring snacks (there aren't a lot of places on the island, and those that are there are often closed)!

Spent 4 nights in the Alert Bay Lodge as part of a 2 week stay in BC. Good accommodation and great breakfasts. Loved the wood fire in the evenings. Our hosts made sure that our connections for the day trips were all set up and arranged taxis to/from the ferry.

From arriving and no taxi to meet us- small community-lovely local lady quickly rectified on her mobile. Alert Bay Lodge- stayed 5 nights-Our room was really comfortable- (not modern standard- but really adequate). Felt soo at home right away -didn't bother to lock bedroom door at all-no need. Wood fire and sipping B.C. wine-(bought from liquor store downtown- David will put in fridge and has great tips for fast cooling) while enjoying the views. David is an amazing host/cook - helped us no end with our travel problems- really grateful-nothing was ever too much trouble for him- A really lovely guy! Quite a trek from harbour ferry- about 20 mins walk. Many restaurants closed and in need of TLC. Only two open! Pub - told food not great - but can't comment as not tried- but lovely one recommended and tried which is run by a lovely Indian family and the food superb and very reasonable- it's cafe type!. Also Try the "Bannock with berries"- lush and yummy! Next door to the whale watch sea smoke centre. Loved the whalewatch tour-they provide insulated coverall suits-warm and cosy! A.J. was our guide-saw mega things-orcas/150 pod dolphins/sea lions/seals/minky/eagles and so much more

David is running this establishment in such a delightful, friendly and helpful way we should really give 5 stars except that our room was a bit dowdy and, we thought, in need of a fresh up. We would happily stay at this Lodge again.

Room Tip: Great location and sea view from dining/sitting room. Rooms are at back. Room 4 probably best with its balcony and view etc.
