We booked a late November evening meal at Le Caveau in Grand Pre. With no intention of a long drive home after the meal we looked for accommodations nearby. Then I read about this place called The Olde Lantern Inn next door to the Domaine de Grand Pre Winery. We had never heard of the place and we thought we knew this part of the valley.
I talked earlier on the phone with the owner and after a long conversation explaining renovations were in progress booked a room for the night. We arrived shortly after 4 PM and checked in. What a cozy spot. We were the only guests for that night and it was like our private lodge. Our room on the main floor was very comfortable lacking no amenities. The inn is a rambling structure filled with unique rooms, historic appearing architecture, wonderful little spaces and sometimes serendipitous furnishings.
The owners, Desmond and Adriana had remembered we had to cancel our earlier planned stay to celebrate our anniversary and surprised us with a bottle of champagne and even provided the proper glasses.
We settled in and soon enough it was off for our evening meal. I had been told about the story behind the inn’s name by another visitor and was looking forward to our walk to the winery but I won’t spoil the fun.
Breakfast was amazing. “French toast or eggs benedict?”; I couldn’t make up my mind. “How about both?” Both were delicious and the presentation?; see the photo.
To say the least, Desmond and Adriana are interesting hosts and continue to lead a very adventurous life. We could have talked for ours they made us feel that comfortable.
Don’t hesitate to take a walk up over the hill to get a panoramic view of Grand Pre and Cape Blomidon in the distance.
The in progress renovations did not affect our stay in any way. The hosts have created a very special atmosphere which creates a wonderful and memorable stay. Thank You.
