Good affordable place in Port Elgin

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 9, 2015via mobile
We had a basement room # 112, as price is lower than the higher floors. It is 2 bedrooms and kitchen, which is very good for families with kids.

The room is clean, though don't expect luxury, but for few days ok. There is full size fridge, stove, microwave, coffee maker. 1 king bed in each room.
Price was 109/night plus taxes.

There is coffee culture next to motel, union burger, McDonalds cross the street. Subway to your right 2 minutes walking.
Walmart to your left 5 minutes walking, in brief: the location is super.
There is barbecue area in the backyard of the hotel, bring your set with you as well as all your stuff. At night there is no light in the backyard so we had to buy a lamp to be able to cook, check grill heat as it was not strong enough for steaks.
You can ask Bob the manager about anything but don't expect to get all what you ask for, he will help you with info but not actions unless he can.
Barbecue: you are on your own.

If you want to know where to go in Port Elgin or what to do: ask Bob he is good in that, by the way, there is nothing much to do there unless you intend to drive and move around and explore surroundings.

There are many beaches for swimming in Port Elgin, the best one is the main beach as there are people around you and you can find something to eat, but don't count much on that, still it is a small beach.
Better to have a car or bring all your stuff with you.
Activity on the beach: volleyball, kids train station for 15 minutes ride ( ticket for kid 7 dollars),adults are welcome to take the train as well. Check train schedule before going.

Port Elgin is a very small city but ok, not the best, but if you want something affordable, calm, fresh shallow water, it is a good choice.

Upper floor , great suite, very helpful staff, everything you need in family holiday hotel. Great as central point to day trip or even a just 1 night stop over. Clean and well maintained. Great price and value. Ask them about best spot to watch the sunset.

Our group stayed here for a weekend. It is a motel that is used during the week by workers at the Bruce Power plant so it has all the amenities of home. The fridge actually got cold and worked. The suite we had was cozy, not overly large but for the price it was good. The queen sized bed took up almost the whole bedroom. The rooms were clean and tidy and our room had a usable balcony. The bathroom was small and dated with a fan that was very noisy whenever the light was turned on. Our group was able to use one of the BBQ's and the gazebo for the evening which was great. The owner even brought us out more utensils when he noticed how much food we were cooking. Our group thought the place was great for our purposes.

Room tip: first floor or second floor not the basement

What a fantastic little gem of a place!

The exterior isn't much to look at, but the suites are both cozy and roomy with everything that you need to be comfortable.

The kitchen has all the utensils you would need to create a home cooked meal. All you need is to bring groceries.

The living/dining room is cozy and comfortable, roomy enough for a dining set, loveseat, and armchair to lounge in while you relax.

The bedroom is very comfortable, complete with a king-sized mattress and clean, comfortable sheets.

All in all, our stay at Sand Castle Suites was a fantastic one and we would gladly recommend that travellers take a night or two to rest and relax here.

As soon as you step into this motel, you can smell stale cigarette smoke. This is supposed to be a "non-smoking" motel. While our room was clean it reeked of old cigarette smoke. The owner(s) know this because the air fresher used during cleaning was overpowering when we entered the room. The walls and ceilings have all been covered with stucco which holds the smoke odour even more. The ceiling in the bathroom is so low that we felt like we were breathing in the smoke directly. Also, the bedroom was so small that you have to turn sideways to walk around to the other side of the bed. It appears that the owner(s) caters to the Bruce Power workers rather than intermittent travellers.

This is a place I liked, it's set up like little apartment with a living room, kitchen and bedroom but when I showed up with my bag and work boots in hand, the price jumped. I can't say that is still the case but that is what happened when I booked in there last time. It may be different owners now but I'd still hide my boots. :-) I rented for a week and paid the going rate, then I came back two weeks later as I had a temporary job at the local Nuclear Energy Plant and when I went to book my room he gave me a much higher price and when I asked why, he asked if I was going to work at the Bruce and when I said yes, he said, well you're going to make big money! I asked what my wages had to do with the price of his rooms, they don't affect the price of any other room anywhere I've ever been.....as I said, that was long ago and I live in town now. The rooms are good and convenient and homey too, with everything you could need, a stove included, so don't just take my opinion and check it out if it's what you need.

Room tip: Parking is on the South side as is the entrance.
