A unique stay

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 26, 2017via mobile
If you're looking for updated fancy rooms don't stay here. But if you want to meet a charming owner who runs an inexpensive, family-friendly motel on the shores of Lake Huron this is THE place.

My brother booked rooms for us here after speaking to Sunny, the owner and I was glad he did. She checked us in with such good humor that all 5 of us in 3 rooms loved her. Don't be surprised if she compares you to Matt Damon, it's a compliment!

The rooms are suites with beds in 2 rooms and a kitchenette. There are grills and a gazebo in back, and you could see there were a lot of families there.

I really enjoyed Sunny, the owners, attention and willingness to give u satisfaction.
She even called me the day of check in to see what time i would like to check in, but i was on the road.
Very cozy apt/efficiency type suite....kitchen with all the amentities, separate bdrm, with those comfy pillows. Living room area w desk small dining area, bathrm etc. Very nice.
I would definitely recommend. Dont let the entrance set up give u doubts. June 2/3 2017

I went to the Sand Castle Motel for a weekend in April. The staff was great, very helpful. The room was comfortable, including a kitchenette with utensils, dishes, glasses. The bathroom was basic, nothing fancy, but it was fine. I would probably visit this Motel again if I return to Port Elgin.

Excellent stay, rental unit was a full amenities suite..actually like renting someone's apartment.
We had left behind an expensive piece of electronic equipment and Sunny searched and found it. She, and husband, packed it carefully, took to FedEx, and ship it to us. They never asked for money up front...only that once we received it, e-transfer freight charges. We wanted to send a gift to show how grateful we were, but they firmly insisted they would not accept anything, in fact would refuse the e-transfer if it wasn't exact amount. Had a cook up in BBQ area, fuel supplied, and separate/private spots.
I have never, and have stayed in thousands of locations, seen such pure genuine friendliness and common decency .See ya soon guys !

Let me start by saying the management is very nice and accommodating. But this place needs some serious TLC. The Hallways and staircases need vacuuming. The shower had mold on the ceiling and shower curtain was old and stained. Only A/C is wall unit in second room which is very loud and does nothing for the main room when door is closed at night. Would not return unless upgraded.

We stayed here for 2 nights on a long weekend. We rented a family suite, which had a kitchenette, 1 small dining table, 1 bathroom, 1 bedroom with a queen bed and TV and the main living area also had 1 queen bed and a TV. Our room was on the third floor, so we had a balcony with 2 chairs.
Management was very nice, but the hotel needs a lot of updates.
There are no elevators, so if you don't do well with stairs this may not be the place for you. There are stairs to get to any floor in the hotel - not many, but some people aren't able to do stairs at all.
The room was, for the most part, clean, but needed updating. The beds seemed new and the bedding was very clean. Under the bed, could have used a better vacuum job - there were crumbs, not from us. The kitchen was clean and dishes, dish soap and dishtowels provided. The bathroom sink and toilet were clean, but the tub and shower walls were old and had stains. The room had a window a/c unit, but only in the separate bedroom, so if you close the door at night, the people in the main area bed get no a/c. They provide a small table fan, that helps a bit, but we still found it warmer than we like. We did open the balcony door, a bit, but the screen to the door was off and actually didn't fit that door, so there were gaps and we didn't really want to let any bugs in.
The management were nice, the price was reasonable, the location of the hotel was great and we did really like that we could put the kids in a separate room at night, but unless some updates were done, I would look elsewhere for accommodations.
