The sand of cavendish beach is silky smooth, and for ocean water it is pretty warm. The iconic red cliff of PEI cradle the beach and the towering sand dunes are a sight to behold. However, there are a lot of rocks and driftwood pieces in the sand, so you have to be careful when walking. Also even on a calm day the surf can be a bit strong for people with young children. If you go to stay at the beach, walk a ways away from the stairs before you plop your stuff down as the tour busses of sight-seers make a constant stream of noisy people looking for photo ops in that location. A new boardwalk with ramp access is near completion which will make the beach more accessible. There is a small canteen as well as well-maintained change and washrooms. Compared to some other Maritime beaches, this one is certainly unique for its amazing scenery, but for actual swimming/beach going I would rate it behind Parlee beach for sand and water quality.
