We’d really love to be giving this auberge an absolutely top rating. In fact, we feel bad not doing so because it’s so near to being perfect – but unfortunately there’s one big drawback.
First the good stuff. The rooms here are beautifully presented and the staff lovely and helpful. The breakfast room at the front of the hotel has a great view of the ocean with lots of light and a deck for good weather. The bar behind the breakfast room is cosy with lots of atmosphere and another deck. Breakfast is top quality with an excellent selection, amply provisioned. The hotel is also being extended and many rooms have their own seating areas, many protected from the winter weather.
Now the bad bit. The hotel is in an old building with plenty of creaking floors. There are hard floors for allergy and hygiene reasons. Despite the notes posted by management in each room requesting shoes off and consideration for your neighbours, you are effectively at the mercy of other occupants. At times it seemed we had a herd of elephants stomping about upstairs. If your neighbours show consideration as requested by walking quietly, or you have no one above you, you’re in for a good stay. If not, it can be pretty wearing. Without the herd upstairs, this would have been a flawless, relaxing stay.More
