“A hidden gem and a delight”
Reviewed 24 August 2009

We stayed here for 3 nights on a park experience package that included breakfast, a lunch pack and a four course meal every evening. We had an absolutely fabulous time, using the great location of the gite (bang in the centre of a beautiful national park) as a base from which to do some hiking during the day.

The room (which was in the main hotel - there are also chalets) was very spacious and clean, with useful mosquito screens, a sofa and a table and chairs. Although we didn't use it, there was cable tv. The bathroom was clean and stocked with nice local organic products. Although the room was ample and comfortable, it was not the best feature of the hotel. This was the restaurant and also the bar. We loved relaxing in the bar with a cocktail whilst looking up at Mont-Albert. Then a fantastic meal was served - top quality ingredients and very well cooked. The only issue we had was that on one evening when the restaurant was busy the service was a little slow.

We had an amazing time and have never come across somewhere where we could hike beautiful trails in the day then come back to such great food. I would love to return here.

We stayed 2 nights at the Gite. The personnel was very friendly. The room was large, rather basic, but very quiet, clean, and the bed was comfortable. Room had a flat-screen TV. We used the laundry facilities, which worked well. The hotel has a nice pool in front, which we did not use. All rooms have a nice view of the Mont Albert, just in front of the hotel. If you have a choice, try to get a room on the top floor for the best view. The corner rooms are larger. The restaurant was excellent, our waiter for the first evening, Eric, was equally excellent. The food was expensive, but the quality high. The fish and game were tasty! Wine list is extensive. We were offered a larger glass upon demand only, which somewhat clashed with the level of the restaurant. The dining room was very nice, and I just wondered if the caribou on my plate was the same as the one on the wall ;-)
Hotel Bar is nice, with leather couches and fireplace. Free Internet.
Hiking in the park is very good, saw moose and trails not overcrowded. The hotel is in the center of the park, isolated and very quiet, which is perfect for nature lovers. We had a wonderful time. I am giving the hotel 3* for price for the rooms, but the price for the food, although high, was commensurate with the quality. I recommend taking their Forfait Gourmand.

We spend there two nights. It is good for hiking, because it is in the middle of the parc. The huts are very nice with fireplace. But the price is high. Breakfast is o.k., but nothing special, dinner we found expensive.

My family (two adults and two children ages 13 & 14) stayed at the Gite du Mont Albert for five nights. This is a wonderful place for people who enjoy hiking and active vacations and don't mind being cut off from the world for a few days (no TV, and we had no cell phone access, but there is a computer in the lobby for those who need internet). The Gite is within walking distance of the trailheads of some fabulous hikes, and a short drive from others, and as far as I could tell was the only hotel in the area (there is also a campground).

We splurged on a cabin. It was quite expensive, but it had a full kitchen which allowed us to prepare most of our meals very easily, so I suppose we recouped some of the expense by not eating out. It also had two bedrooms, which was nice. It was immaculate and seemed to be brand-new (#26 -- some of the cabins closer to the inn I think are considerably older). It was very comfortably furnished, and we felt it was worth the price.

The only complaints I have are that the lighting was somewhat limited in the kitchen, and the two bedrooms were each furnished with small (double) beds -- fine for two people who are compatible bedfellows, but we brought an air mattress for my son.

One thing to take into account if you stay here: options for dining nearby are limited. The Gite has a restaurant which is very expensive. We had lunch there one day and it was good, but didn't leave us feeling that we needed to come back for a dinner that would likely have totaled $150 or more for the four of us. There is a little cafeteria in the nearby Discovery Center (didn't try it but the menu looked OK), and the gift shop in the Discovery Center has a few staples for hikers -- granola bars, cocoa, etc. Other than that, I think the closest restaurants and markets are in St. Anne du Mont, which is 1/2 hour away. I'd recommend getting a room or cabin with a kitchenette, or camping, and stocking up on supplies in St. Anne if you're planning to stay for several days.

  • Liked — Location & spacious, comfortable cabin.
  • Disliked — Beds a bit small.

The beautiful location of this lodge is the only thing justifying the premium price of the lodge -- the rooms are rather ordinary fare. The room was clean and the drains worked. We didn't see any moose. This motel was unique in that I saw something in the bathroom that I had never seen before -- even in the cheapest of motels -- a note that "The ALGO body care products are available for your stay only." This pertained to the bar soap in unsealed boxes, and the wash gel and shampoo which were in non-sealed and label-worn plastic bottles. (Wonder what would happen to you if you took the leftovers with you? -- would you receive a bill in the mail?) My suspicion is that these bottles get refilled with wash gel and shampoo that they buy in bulk. I didn't use any of the products as I am averse to using unsealed products.

Total comfort in the wilderness.
We stayed one night. We were impressed by the beauty of the surroundings. Food was excellent, the bedroom was spacious, clean and quiet. Tha common areas were impressive with the view of Mt Albert still having snow at the top at the end of June. We saw mooses at night and in the morning near the hotel.
One regret was that we did not stay there for longer.
