Although the owners and personable enough, the "hotel" lacks the anonymity of a hotel, with the ability to come and go as your please, eat breakfast when you choose, etc. it was very much like staying in someone's home, and we didn't have the feeling that they were overly keen on having "guests". If you like a quirky B&B atmosphere, then perhaps it is the right choice. Certainly the room was lovely, though chilly. While there were DVDs, there was no television service, nor a phone in the room.
For these prices, one would not hesitate to ask for special services at a hotel. However, in this setting, given the understanding that the staff was limited, it was uncomfortable to place any demands on the management.

I'm a travel writer, and I've stayed at magnificent hotels all over the world. But my favorite hotel is Casa de la Real Aduana, because it has not only taste but soul. Staying there is an experience that enlightens you--it engages your senses, your aesthetic sensibilities, your appreciation for all that humans can do to create beauty. The hotel is filled with the best examples of crafts from the area, which should be explored. Didier and Gemma are knowledgeable and hospitable in the most profound sense of the word.

Room Tip: Any room is great.

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was a fantastic experience. The house is a real gem, superbly filled with ceramics, drawings, photos, etc. Didier and Gemma are the real thing. They are very nice and keen to share their knowledge and experience with their guests. It was a pleasure talking to them. We really recommend this place, located in the centre of Patzcuaro. Unforgettable breakfast!

The Casa de la Real Aduana was the perfect place to spend several fabulous days visiting the Patzquaro region. The hotel is very well located minutes from the central square and restaurants, shops and churches. The property is historic and has been designed and decorated to reflect both the history and the artistic tradition of the region. The room we selected was very comfortable and was filled with a selection of their treasures. The collection in the rooms and hallways is worthy of a museum. The owners offer an excellent breakfast and dinner option and we took advantage of both. A bonus on a rainy night was to eat with the well-traveled proprietors and discuss a range of local and artistic issues. We happen to enjoy music and had the privilege of sharing a few hours with the owners in their special music room with an extraordinary sound system and sampled part of their collection of 11,000 CDs. The Casa Aduana is much more than a hotel if you allow yourself to get into the experience of the history and, the artwork and the music through the generosity of the owners. Enjoy! Canadians living in San Miguel de Allende.

Room Tip: WE felt all of the rooms were excellent - choice depend a little on your budget.

To stay here is a transforming experience. All five rooms are a work of art filled with ceramics, drawings, photos, lithographs, textiles, masks etc from the region and literally all over the world. The collection is so well put together and so armonious the pieces belong together even if one is from Canada and the next one from Michoacan. The patio has been turned into a gorgeous garden and the breakfast room with its chimney is just breathtaking. The attention to detail will fulfill your highest expectations. The house dates back to the 16th century. It also has a library and music room!!! Just heavenly.
