“Home atmosphere but you need patience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2012

A great alternative to the tourist infested restaurants of the Akumal village. El Ultimo Maya is located in the pueblo where the real people live and the atmosphere is relaxed and down to earth. However, you need to be patient, be willing to put up with the cooking smoke, and try not to watch the trashy shows they have on TV.

Highlights from a food perspective were the sopa de lima (lime soup) and the fish fillet made in Mayan style (wrapped in a foil) - cannot remember the Spanish name.

The pueblo is about 1.5 kms from the village and can be accessed by the walkway over the main 307 highway. We felt very safe walking back at night.

Total with tax and tip for a family of 4 with no alchohol or dessert (too stuffed and far in excess of my booze quota for the day) was 500 pesos.

“Excellent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

The fried banana's were amazing!! The owner is super sweet and gave us instructions and walked us all the way to the beach so we could find our way. The food is super good as well! Its a definite place to each lunch or dinner or breakfast!

“A Real Find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2012

As authentic as it gets, and a wonderful experience. The owner speaks English. You will meet some genuine locals. The drinks are as good as those at beach restaurants, and the prices are low. Be sure to order the special Mayan fish wrapped in tinfoil. Totally worth the short walk or even shorter car journey over the bridge across the main highway. Look for it immediately across from the water tower at the top of the hill two blocks into town.

We wanted to like this place, but we waiting 1 hour for food in a place completely devoid of charm only to be served the salties, overly limey ceviche ever.
