A great alternative to the tourist infested restaurants of the Akumal village. El Ultimo Maya is located in the pueblo where the real people live and the atmosphere is relaxed and down to earth. However, you need to be patient, be willing to put up with the cooking smoke, and try not to watch the trashy shows they have on TV.
Highlights from a food perspective were the sopa de lima (lime soup) and the fish fillet made in Mayan style (wrapped in a foil) - cannot remember the Spanish name.
The pueblo is about 1.5 kms from the village and can be accessed by the walkway over the main 307 highway. We felt very safe walking back at night.
Total with tax and tip for a family of 4 with no alchohol or dessert (too stuffed and far in excess of my booze quota for the day) was 500 pesos.
