“Another great vacation in Mexico!”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

This resort is massive! The Akumal and 'beach' areas of the resort are definitely the best place to stay.

The beach area is great to explore and if you like to sun on the beach it is very nice. The pool areas are ample, the staff was friendly.

We enjoyed our stay at the resort. We ate every meal at the buffets and did get a little tired of them but the quality of food and options were really great. Big suggestion is to ensure that you make reservations for the a-la-carte options ASAP! Some folks mentioned that they emailed before arrival? Unfortunately we could not get into one restaurant when we tried to reserve... options very late were offered and we don't like to eat at 10PM! With that being said we enjoyed the buffets, no complaints.

Resort is clean.... staff very nice!

Edgar is definitely a nice guy to stop to say hello to, he works the swim up bar. We read about him on trip advisor before our visit and enjoyed his excellent Mojitos and visits.

We keep working while we travel and internet worked great - technology is good at resort. We have never had problems in Mexico with technology though.

We were off the resort a number of times and with the size of the resort we would just recommend to watch where you are getting let out of a taxi! No problem to get the next hotel shuttle if you get the wrong room but something to keep in mind.

Room Tip: It is a massive resort. Stay at Akumal if you get an option....

Me and my new husband decided we wanted a long relaxing honeymoon somewhere we could relax after the stress of a fantastic wedding. We decided to go to Mexico for 3 weeks as past experience proved excellent. We decided on Riviera Maya as we wanted somewhere a little less lively then when we went to Cancun and chose to stay in the Gran Bahia Principe as we had be given great feedback off people who had been.

When arriving in Mexico you have to get cleared through immigration and complete a visa. This was a nightmare as there was also other flights trying to be cleared. In total this probably took us 2 hours, didn't help that we were in the slowest queue ever! Once we were through it was time for our long transfer! It took over 2 hours as the hotel was the last drop off so make sure you use toilet before you leave airport!!

We were staying in the Akumal hotel which is 1 of 3 sister hotels. The others being Coba and Tulum. There is also another hotel called Akumal Premier. The good thing with this complex is you can use any of the bars and resturants at any time, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Little train vehicles will take you to the other hotels and run every 10 minutes.

We were checked in straight away and the bell boy took us and our cases to our room using a golf buggy as the complex is huge! Before we left for Mexico we emailed the hotel to ask about a honeymoon suite and we also asked First Choice who we booked with to notify them too. We were told we had a king size room and a basket of fruit and bottle of tequila waiting. Although were were happy with the room we do not think this was a honeymoon suite. Our room was cleaned everyday and minibar was restocked everyday too.

There are 3 buffet resturants on the complex, 1 to each hotel which are open 3 times a day. We ate at the Akumal buffet for first week then got told we could eat at any of the buffets whenever we wanted. Once we tried the other buffets we never ate in the Akumal buffet again. This was because the food was way better in the other hotels. There are about 13 a la carte resturants throughout the complex which you can use 3 times per week. I advise you to book these up all at once as they get filled up very quickly. All the resturants we tried were good but Tortuga (Brazillian) and Makado (Japanese) were excellent. When booking the Japanese try to get into the show cooking. There are also Fish, French, Mexican, Mediterranean and Itallian. Some of these returants open up for breakfast and lunch. This may have been due to how busy the resort was. A lot of weddings take place at the resort, at least 1 a day! There are also 24hr bars open offering fast food.

There are lots of sunbeds around the pools and on the private beach but be warned they get taken very early. I was up at 7 everyday and people had already started to saved them! Pool towels are supplied. Everyday there is a dolphin show at the Tulum pool at 11:30 but we didn't make it once as we were too busy sunbathing! Everyday a photography team walk the whole complex with different animals for you to photo with. These photos can be purchased from the photo shop situated inside the lobby. We had ours took with Lea the monkey who was so cute. You can purchase photos or disks, 4 phots on disk cost us $36.
Beach is nice but rocky in parts with sharp stones, shells.

The entertainment team complete games and activities in one of the pools throughout the day. Although we didn't participate people seemed to be enjoying themselves. The evening entertainment was also good although we do feel the entertainment in the Riu hotels was better. It was still good though and did cater for all.

The Mexican people are very polite and cheerful but be warned, when you go to Mexico, it is Mexican time! No rushing and be prepared to wait for drinks, etc. A small tip of $1 or 20 pesos goes a long way. There are no extra cost for branded drinks but be sure to ask for them if want them i.e. smirnoff and coke not vodka.

There are many excusions you can do while in Mexico. We only did the Xel Ha as we were so lazy but plan to do more when go back in April! Xel Ha is a water adventure park where you can snorkel and raft and even swim with dolphins at an additional cost. All food and drink is supplied and snorkel equiptment can be used for a deposit of 300 pesos which is returned once finished. Chichen Itza and Coco Bongos are also worth doing (past experience). We also went to the Mexican night which is part of the complex and is added onto your bill for you to pay for when you leave. You can also hire laptops for around $5 for half an hour which again is added onto your leaving bill. Lauren the First Choice/Thomson rep is fab and let us change our excursion no problem.

Overall had a fantastic time here and would probably come back in the future, maybe even renew our wedding vows! Just take note, transfer times are long especially if you have other drop offs. If you can get a private transfer at a good price, do it. Also don't forget your departing tax - £42, 780 pesos or $52. Has to be cash!

Room Tip: Huge complex so if walking can be a struggle, ask for one nearer the hotel facilites.

It is big, but its plusses are:
a lovely 2 km beach that we love to walk on - unusual to get such long beaches in this area.
the reefs give you a protected place to swim even if its windy/rough, and it often is, in the winter.
the many al-a-carte restaurants have great service, and decent to excellent food.
the food at the buffet, was really quite good - logs of veggies, and grilled foods.
the fact that it is big means you can always find a nice band for dancing in the evenings, in one of the three hotels (ride shuttle to other hotels) Although they shutdown at 11 pm, and you are expected to go to the Hacienda.

So this by far is the fanciest resort we have ever stayed at. Because you get use of all the other resorts joined, it has everything you could ever need...the rooms are NICE the grounds are so nice, the pools are great, the beach is beautiful but rougher water which is fun for wave surfing but not snorkelling or taking a relaxing wade around. The food is fabulous, take your pic of where you wanna eat! Entertainment the best we have seen....shops, service all good. Booze was awesome because you could serve yourself at certain bars which was so nice! However, because it was such a large resort it was a bit overwhelming and kinda more work then I would sometime3s want on a relaxing vacay. So many options and decisons to make, and a big hike to get anywhere or you had to wait and take shuttles....never really a familiar face either which is kinda nice sometimes. We got a great deal so we would never complain but I think I would rather pay less (than their full price) in the future and get a humbler resort that feels like home. I am a small town kinda girl and prefer simple, comfortable and easy rather than flashy, extravagent and overwhelming....this resort left me a bit tired at the end of the week, but the memories are something I am glad I have!!! Oh yah, and it's far from a lot of the action so be prepared for pricier longer taxi rides and it took us about 2 hrs to get to our resort from the airport in a shuttle.

Our family stayed for 7 nights in early January and we had the best "family" vacation ever. The kids (9 and 7) loved exploring all the various pools (9 or 10) between the three resorts. The trams make it very efficient to travel between the Akumel, Coba and Tulum resorts. The buffets were very well presented and if you did not find what you wanted you could easily hop on tram and go to one of the other buffets. The Arlequin, a la carte was our favorite. We ended up using two of our three a la cartes at this one. Overall the service was very good. The pool towel system worked out well (after initial concerns) and we never had to fight to find a lounger either at the pool or at the beach. The beach between all three resorts spreads for close to a mile so finding an area you like was quite easy. They have nice protected areas for the kids to swim in the ocean. For the best snorkelling near the resort, take the tram to the Tulum resort, go to the ocean and turn left, walk down towards the next point (10 minutes or so). Previous reviewers have stated that they leave the red flags up all the time. This is true however the one to watch is the one near the sailboat, jetski etc area. This is the flag that changes (thank-you to the dive centre for that info). Our kids loved the mini disco (held nightly) and if you stay for the entertainment after you will not be dissapointed as the shows were very professional. We took a cab to Akumal Bay ($14 US)(arranged by the porters at the front of the hotel)(also agree on the rate before getting in the cab to come back) to go snorkelling. This was great and we found the turtles ourselves. It is best to go in the morning.
Overall we had a great trip and the direct flight was also great. We will do this again as it was very relaxing.

First of all....thank you to all of those that posted previously, your travel tips made our vacation a great success.

We just returned from the Bahia, we booked a private transfer (USA Transfers - $160US return, pay in adviance or cash on arrival) to/from the airport. Highly recommend this, after a long flight we dreaded the long bus ride, we arrived at the Bahia in only one hour and at least an hour ahead of the Air Transat bus. Returning as well, the Air Transat bus picks you up 5 hours before your departure time.....way too early! Ask for a 3 hour pick up time to return to the airport, more than enough time.

The resort is massive!! The trams run every 10-15 mins. We never had to wait long.

ROOMS: We travelled to the Bahia with our teen-aged boys, we had 2 rooms at the Akumal in the Royal Golden Section. Definitely worth the upgrade, your room is closer to the beach and pool, private bar (club) with wifi, 4 a la carte dinners instead of 3. Request villa 66 as you will have unubstructed view of the ocean.

POOLS: We spent the first couple of days at the Akumal small pool, very close to our villa and the snack bar. I got tired of hearing the same music over and over again. The boys preferred the larger pool (located near the lobby), more swimming area and a swim-up bar. Definitely recommend going to the pool area early (8am) to reserve your chairs by placing your towels on them, if not you will have a hard time finding a chair.

FOOD: We ate at all the Buffets for breakfast and dinner. We preferred the Coba buffet. We had 4 reservations to the a la cartes: El Pescador (Coba) - do not recommend, Mikado (Coba) - reserve the show, if not don't bother, Arlequin (Akumal) - highly recommend, Don Pablo (Tulum) - we didn't make it back in time from our tour. The portions are very small, the boys needed to go to the snack bar a couple of hours later.

SHOPPING: Market at the Hacienda (take tram) or very short walk from Tulum. We found the prices were less expensive than in Playa del Carmen. We took a taxi for 700 pesos return trip to Playa del Carmen during the evening, very safe. The driver waited for us while we shopped and then returned us to the Bahia.

TOUR: We took a day trip to Xel-Ha ($79 US). We highly recommend this. Absolutely amazing. The cost includes your transporation and entrance. If you want to do other activities this is additional. We did the Snuba Cenote ($49 US pp) and Swim with Dolphins ($89 US). And of course, you will have an opportunity to purchase photos. Sergio was the snuba instructor/guide and he was great.

GOLF: We had unlimited green fees with the Royal Golden package. However, a cart costs $80 US. My husband really enjoyed the golf. He went to the driving range 2 times and golfed twice as well.

TIPPING: take lots of US $1 bills.

BEACH: The Akumal location is the better. However, very very rocky. We have been to Varadera, Cuba and this is not comparable at all. If the beach is a deal breaker, Riviera Maya is not for you, go to Varadero!

Room Tip: Royal Golden Section - Villa 66 or 67
