I'm not the heaviest reviewer of properties, however my most recent experience was so exceptional, that I feel compelled to provide my honest opinion of the property and maybe, even more importantly the Privilege Club.
Firstly I should mention, that this has been our third visit to the Bahia Principe complex in the riviera maya over the last 3 years. We stayed with our sons at Coba the first time, Sian Ka'an (wife and I only) the second time. This time we stayed at Akumal with our sons again and had a great time.
Firstly, I'll review the hotel.
Food - Excellent wherever you go, and this is important, no one wants to go on vacation and eat sub-par food. All the buffets, snack bars and ala cartes are great, you can eat anywhere and feel confident about the quality of the food.
Entertainment - What you'd expect. Micheal Jackson is great, the rest are a little cheesy, but hey - they're all good fun.
Booze - Is good. Table wine appears to be an OK spanish wine, paid for wine lists are available if you're looking for something more sophisticated.
Rooms - Clean and spacious. In my experience, Coba, Tulum and Akumal all have about the same layout and furnishings. Sian Ka'an differs quite dramatically.
Overall, I would never hesitate for even a second to suggest this resort.
Why I keep coming back enthusiastically? The privilege club.
Listen folks,...I'm not the heaviest reviewer of properties, however my most recent experience was so exceptional, that I feel compelled to provide my honest opinion of the property and maybe, even more importantly the Privilege Club.

Listen folks, this complex is huge, there are like a trillion staff there and a las-vegas strip number of rooms. All the hotels in the riviera maya are like this. It's how you get to select from 15 ala cartes and about 5 kilometers of beach (which has staff raking up seaweed and rocks on it, all day long). You need to be big in order to afford all these people and amenities.
The trade off of course, is some level of personalized service. Let's be clear, the staff tries really hard to get to know you, remember your name and make the experience better than ever. But in fairness, they all see about a million people a year, as a result you may find yourself feeling like part of a herd.
As a member of the privilege club, I never have to worry about feeling lost in the crowd.I am entitled to the best rooms, unlimited ala cartes, a private beach, a fleet of private cartes that take you directly to your destination, a private beach and private lounges.
When I go all inclusive, I like to know I can have a good meal...the privilege club gives me unlimited bookings.
When I go all inclusive, I like to know I can have a good drink...the privilege club gives me grey goose and courvoisier when everyone else is drinking smirnoff.
I know this comes off a bit like a radio advert - but honestly, I'm loving that I am a member. And this time we had a couple of issues with our room and some adjustments needed to be made... it was then that I really saw the benefit. I called my Privilege Concierge, and magic starts happening. No follow up calls, no wasted time. Things get dealt with while I'm on the beach. Then they send someone to the beach to let me know that everything is solved.
This is the level of service I want. This is what I get at the Bahia Principe and the Privilege Club.
Thank you to Maria Lopez and her staff, notably Narendra, Jose and Diego at the club and Dair and Teo at the beach. You all made our last trip such a joy. I can't wait to see you next time!
Anyone reading... Don't hesitate on this resort, even for a second, and consider the privilege club. I'm happy we did.More
