“2nd time back and enjoy it more”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

Return to the Bahia Principe almost a year later and enjoyed it even more than the last trip. A group went this time and we enjoyed are selves. Spent most of days at the beach across form La Tortuga restraunt. Great beach go south for less rocks in water, some decent snorkeling though I recommend Akumal beach for sea turtles and stingrays only 3 km from resort.... Never had any problems getting chairs though if you want prim seating or be together go early. Didn't spend anytime at the pools this year though observation was seating filled up fast. Restaurants ate most breakfast and lunch at la Tortuga, Akumal buffet seemed better than Tulums book your a la carte before you leave was slim pickings when we arrived. Enjoyed the seafood restraunt the most. Staff were excellent though the pool bar at La Tortuga only put rum in your drink if you ask. The room safe is very small and will not hold the IPAD3... The shows at night were karokeish enjoyed the lobby lounge at Coba the best for people watching. If you want easy access to pools and beach stay at Akumal if you like the pools and newer accomadations stay at Coba..
Dislike that they have a time share desk and are a little more aggressive than I would like though they accept NO. Premium drinks ie Kaluha, Baileys and so on non existant

Room Tip: Try to avoid staying in buildings 26 through 32 are far away from everything.

Our ratings are based on value for money...regardless of star rating. (i.e. Rating a 3 star as average means it meets the expectation of a 3 star property. Similarly, rating a 5 star as average means it meets the requirements of a 5 start. Any rating above or below indicates excellent or poor service/location or facilities.) We will always note whether or not we would return to the property.

- This is a really good hotel and great value for money. 5* by Mexican standards - 3/4* by UK and North American standards
- The food was very good for an all inclusive
- Take up the option to eat in the A La Carte restaurants - six meals are included in your two week stay. The Japanese restaurant is the best out of all of them.
- Tennis - Good selection of courts and take advantage of the free tennis clinics and make the most of the onsite tennis pro and secure yourself some private 1-2-1 instruction.
- Rooms were basic but clean. Try to get yourself a room near the main lobby or you will have a bit of a walk for breakfast etc. That said they do run a shuttle regularly throughout the resort
- You have access to both the Hotel Copa and Akumel.
- Be prepared for an hour and a half transfer airport transfer
- Would return

Room Tip: Ask for one near the main lobby

We stayed March 28-April 4. Mikido's was great as always. We also ate at Portifino and there were ants in the eggplant. Our favorite breakfast buffet was Tequila. They make custom amde omelettes. Alfredo and Gabril were at our beck and call. Thanks guys. The food was not nearly as good as last year. The houskeeping needed alot of pointers this year. We stayed at the Diamond club and had to ask that our Mini bar had to be restocked three times in a week. which was unexceptable. The staff were all very friendly. We will not go back next year because of the food and when you upgrade to the best room possible thats what you expect. That is not what we got this year:(

Room Tip: Snorkel at Akumel bay. The sea turtles are wonderful to see..

We went to Gran Bahia for a wedding , their was fourty in our group. We get there and they separate me from kids for check in. The room we upgraded to and paid extra for was no different then the rest of the rooms and we were facing a swamp. First night we pulled down the sheets and went to bed woke up in the morning to find the sheets were dirty with old blood stains all over them. Then the air conditioning did not work one couple said they could not turn theirs on due to the fact that it smelt like sewage when they did. A staggette/stab was planned at differrent restaurants the guys got in at their restaurant but they told us there had to be a mix up with the reservation and nothing they could do the bride to be was crying. My immediate family of eight booked supper in a restaurant and was not seated together we enjoyed a family meal four on side of the restaurant and four on the other they said nothing they could do about it. At check out they told us we could check out the night before and leave the keys in the room not the case they made me a new key up and sent me back to the room for the keys before we could get on the bus. Their attitude sucked. I had just came back from a wedding in Paurta Vallarta awesome hotel service wedding and about six hundred dollars cheaper. Never going back to this horrible place Gran Bahia Again.

Stayed March 10 to 25
We shave stayed at this resort a number of times and have loved it! We have also brought other families along who have also enjoyed the resort. This property is maintained to excellent standards and the food is very good. We stayed 14 days in total this time and as long as one does not over indulge and eat everything the buffet has to offer on one night, the food choices are such that one not need tire of the food, even if staying a significant length of time. Don Pablo is the very best a la carte, in our opinion but the international restaurant at Akumal is a close second. The Japanese is also very good. The Mexican restaurant "The Tequila" needs a some work on the menu and the buffet is a better choice. In other words, if you can't get a reservation for this one you aren't missing anything. However, it offers very good breakfast and lunch service and is a little quieter than the buffets. Awesome service in this restaurant from especially Gabriel, but also Alfredo and Gonzalez. These guys are well supported by the rest of the staff in this restaurant who also do an outstanding job.

The property is always being highly maintained, from the gardening staff, to shuttle drivers, to housekeeping. the public bathrooms are always spotless, cleaned continuously to a standard that exceed expectations. Our maid, Beti Cruz, looked after our rooms with a high degree of excellence as well, and whenever we met her she was friendly, smiling, and totally accomodating even though langauge prevented us from engaging with her as much as we would have liked. Front desk management is understanding and do their best to satisfy guests requests. The leadership shown by Jose Martinez, front desk manager is exemplary.

To Nikki, a great big thank-you, you are so helpful and your interaction with hotel guests is just one more reason this hotel reflects the level of excellence from everyone.Staff culture is modeled from sr mangement and filters through the ranks. You model outstanding service in spades!

We would go back to this resort in a heartbeat, no questions asked. It is that good! If you are considering an all inclusive experience on the Mayan Coast, this is the place to stay! Julie and Wally Smith, Vancouver island BC

Room Tip: Most villas at Tulum have ocean views. 3rd floor rooms have the best views.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2012

We just returned from a week stay with 45 guests from Halifax. We booked with Sunquest Vacations and the entire trip - start to finish - was incredible!!!

First of all - our wedding coordinator at the resort - EUGENIA was amazing! Emails were responded to within 24 hours (and we had a lot of questions!) We also had 6 birthdays in our group to celebrate while away - so I asked Eugenia if we could do something for the. She booked our entire group into the Tortuga restaurant AND had the staff bake a cake!!! It was awesome!! This was NOT part of her job...so it was just one of the things she did to go above and beyond!!!

We got married on March 14th, 2012 at the Akumal Beach location. It was right on the beach - a wooden structure. The wedding went off without a hitch and we walked barefoot down to the ceremony!! Highly recommend this resort and Eugenia for your dream wedding!! I wouldn't have changed a thing - it was perfect.

The trolly's came and picked up all of the guests at the Lobby Tulum to take them to the wedding location, then a separate trolly came for the bridesmaids, myself and mother. Eugenia was waiting at the wedding location and told us exactly what to do. It was beautiful!!

Guests went to have some drinks at the closest bar and bride/groom went for photos at the Hacienda. Meal started at 530pm.

Our meal was at the Alrequin Restaurant right beside the pool and beach - was very classy. Food was delicious- Chicken Cordon Bleu. After the meal, we headed outside to a poolside cocktail reception - again - it was dreamy! Something right out of a movie. Trees were wrapped with mini lights, chairs decorated (order seat covers from the wedding coordinator) but buy your own sashes online - i was able to get 50 of them online for only $37 Canadian and we brought them with us).

The DJ played our IPOD and had lights/microphone for our dance. It was great! Couldn't have asked for a better time. Guests enjoyed themselves. We "cheaped" out for the bar - if you want a bartender on location you have to pay - 3 options $11/person, $40/person or $60/person. We thought this was nonscence because we were at an all-inclusve resort. Well, we took the $11/person deal (basically meant you had a private bar tender for just your group) - and I'm pretty sure he made all drinks we asked for. I told my guests to run up to the lobby bar if they didn't have the drink you wanted - but I don't think anyone had to. The different prices just mean how much liquor they stock and if it's premium brands like SMIRNOFF, etc. Anyway - recommend cheaping out on this part.

There wer NO extra costs for the wedding when we arrived - so the price they quoted us was the price we paid. Photographer was amazing and we had our pictures the next day. Spent about $1100 on pictures burned on a disk - 92 professional pictures. They were fantastic...people are commenting daily-just how nice they were.

We finished our wedding night off with the wedding party JUMPING into the pool - yes in wedding attire!!! Good memories!

The resort experience was also amazing. The ONLY complaint anyone had was that the beach is a bit rocky - you can't swim unless you go down near the swing bar on the beach. Well most of our guests stayed at the pool anyway - so it didn't matter too much to us but a few complained. We stayed at the Tulum CLUB DIAMOND end so it was a hike to get to that section of the beach.

Food was amazing. Staff were amazing. We're going back for our honeymoon which is exactly 1 month after getting married there. We love it!!! Would return year after year after year!!!!

Thanks Gran Bahia Principe!!!!

Me and my boyfriend have just returned from Bahia Principe, We stayed in the Tulum Block which is the best location to be in as it has a beach location. Coba Block is far away from beach. The hotel is fantastic, very clean, Imaculately kept gardens, staff all very friendly. Food was excellent, plently of choice and always getting replenished. We had a room overlooking the Dolphin pool the Dolphins are well looked after my boyfriend spent the day being a trainer which he loved and would deffinately reccommend as it was good value for money. The A la Carte rest gets booked up quick so go book your reservations asap. We went to the Japanese rest which is gorgeous ask for show seats as you get to see a show while they cook you a meal. The International rest in Azumal was fab. The itailian Portofino in Coba was lovely. The only A la Carte rest we did not like at all was the Med in Coba it was not nice, however there is so many A la cartes you will be spolied for choice. The beach does have breakers in the sea can get a bit rough but because of the breakers its great you can still swim and snorkel which makes it better. The shows of a night were good. The entertainers are all friendly and do games in the day at the activie pool in Tulum. We got a taxi to the Ruins at Tulum which cost £3 on public transport which was great the ruins are worth a visit then you can spend the afternoon snorkelling in the sea. Was great day out. To get out the resort of Playa Del Carmen is around 40 minutes away. A bus will cost £3 a taxi around £15. the resort is great loads of shops, bars, restaurants well worth a visit. All in all the holiday was great the weather was fanatasic 88degrees, no rain at all. only 2 cloudy days. So great time of year to go, Don't be put off that its spring break because all the young people go to Cancun for the clubs, Riviera Maya is quiet perfect for couples and young familes and honeymooners. Not 1 fault at all with holiday, if you are thinking of trying this holiday and you want 5 star, brill food, relaxtion, good beach, clean hotel with friendly staff then book it. Would return.

Room Tip: Tulum Block, Over looking Dolphin Pool
