We stayed at the Grand Sirenis two weeks February 12-26. We booked this resort in the end of October and proceeded to read reviews daily until it was time to leave. We got more and more nervous as the date neared. What a great surprise.
The trip from the airport took over 1 1/2 hours as we had to drop some people of at Dreams. Check in was quick and easy. The front desk people were very friendly and helpful. Our suitcases arrived about 10 minutes after we got to the room. Again very friendly.
The room was big and clean. We did not have a glass partition but it was no big deal, as the toilet itself had a frosted glass door, as well as the shower. Our fridge was stocked everyday with 2 beer, large jug of water and different kinds of pop. We tipped the guy hoping to get a few extra beers but it didn't happen. It's not very cold but i would go get ice then put beers on for awhile to get them cold. Barrilito beer actually very good when its cold. We had about 12 different towel animals the 14 days here.(Cute) The only negative i really had with the room was a bit of a smell and we saw a couple of roaches over the 2 weeks that scared my wife, gut i squashed them quickly and she lived. LOL.
The Food for the most part was very very good. I am a Chef by trade and know the ins and out of preparing food for large amounts of people. They had a great selection for Breakfast with fruit, salads, vegetables, different Mexican choices as well as cooked to order eggs, omelets, fresh Churros, smoked salmon every couple of days and fresh fruit smoothies everyday from Papaya, Watermelon, and our favorite the banana.(Delish) Some days they also had special displays of Mimosas, Bloody Marys, Cactus smoothie was neat to try as well.
We never made it to the main buffet for lunch but the beach bar was OK with cooked to order stuff like wings, fries etc. Its a very weird set up and the guy working there has a terrible job. They mad different stuff on the beach daily as well. Chicken Tacos, Paella was very good roasted whole pig, and hot dogs and hamburgers among the daily specials. The dinner buffets were good with different theme night like Asian(lots of sushi), Italian, and Mexican. We tried all the AL a Carts except the french which you had to pay. They all have a small buffet for appetizers before your meal comes. The Brazilian was great(meat fest), Mexican good, Italian could have been good but my pasta was almost raw. The Cajun was actually pretty bland, Japanese twice. The food was great but our first cook didn't do anything fancy like the table beside us. the 2nd time a different chef did a onion volcano, flambeed etc. he was very good. Sake was good too. The steak house was to my surprise very good. I thought the steak would be tough but it melted in your mouth. Surf and Turf recommended.
You do have to get up early to get the chairs you want by the pool and beach. the 1st morning i woke up early and went for a stroll. by 6:30 that morning lots of chairs were covered already. The main pools are loud with kids and the entertainment crew. We found a great spot by the quiet pool, until some people brought there kids there. The beach was good to. its a bit rocky when you first enter the area but then its sandy and soft a little way in. it is also a bit rocky as you enter the ocean but not too bad. Did lots of snorkeling. it was OK but quite murky at times. Lots of fish to see. Akumal was great and saw a large turtle. Took the collectivo there but it was a long hot walk to the highway and took a cab back. way cheaper than the $40 to go with the resort people and can stay as long as you want.
Overall the whole resort is very big but a 10 min walk will get you anywhere you want to go. My biggest problem with this resort is having to pay for a beach party, or the french restaurant, and wifi. The beds were very hard and you could feel the springs on your knees if you kneel on it. TV was OK but only a 5 or 6 English speaking channels for the 20 min. a day we wanted to watch it.
There is lots of wildlife around. Lots of iguanas that we fed pieces of banana too, saw our first raccoon, colorful birds, and a I think its called a marmot as well.
there were lots of families at this resort. If you don't like kids this isn't the resort for you. Overall this resort was fantastic the service was great whether you tipped or not. We did regularly but the service was the same if you did or didn't. Angel at the lobby bar was my favorite. Hope I've painted a clear picture for you of our holiday.
