My wife and I had the great pleasure of staying in this tidy and charming little casita in Mahahual, Mexico. It is on a residential street in the new part of town. Most of our neighbours were Mexican, so we immediately felt immersed in the local culture.
How lovely to sit outside to eat breakfast each morning in a backyard with all manner of tropical plants and trees (sharing it with geckos, kiskadees and local butterflies). Living in such a casita allowed us to cook our own meals and the experience of shopping locally for foodstuffs was a rewarding part of our holiday and gave us a great chance to practice our Spanish.
From the casita it is about a fifteen minute walk to the beach and some of best easily accessible snorkeling you will find anywhere. At the north end of town, the reef is only about a hundred metres from the shore, and the water shallow most of the way. My wife and I went snorkeling every day during our eleven days stay. We saw pufferfish, rays, cuttlefish, lionfish, all manner of snappers, grunts and angelfish. Every day we saw something new.
The local snorkeling is very, very good, but even better is to be had not far south of town and truly outstanding snorkeling in Xcalak, about 50 minutes south by car.
I would recommend this casita very highly to any couple or small group wanting to experience authentic small town Mexico and especially if one is fond of snorkeling.
In the Casita part of mahahual. Perfect cottage, lovingly upgraded by artistic owners. Quiet. Great courtyard. Area a mix of locals and ex-pats. Good stores, services, restaurants within 2 blocks. A car would be useful, but taxis available. Beach and "town" few minutes away. Quick internet. Perfect for independent couple, family, small group. Not suitable for those who have only vacationed on cruise ship or at all inclusive. But if you enjoy mixing with locals, having a complete small house to yourself, and independance, this is for you. No TV, but who needs that while lounging in a hammock, banana trees beside you, with a gecko running across the thatched roof above your head, cold blender drink in hand?
