“Great little surprise hotel”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

My girlfriend and I stayed at Casa Quetzal the first week of March and found it was just what we were looking for. The year before we had stayed at another hotel closer to the plaza, but we were not happy with it. We arrived about 10 pm from Cancun because we missed the 5:30 bus and had to take the Orient bus. The manager was waiting for us and welcomed us warmly. We were pretty tired, so he took us to our room which was perfect for our needs. The next morning we had coffee in the garden and then ordered a great Mexican breakfast. Just a great way to start a long day of sightseeing. The manager arranged for a cab to take us to Ek Balam and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The hotel is located a few blocks from the main plaza and it's in a nice quiet neighborhood. The beautiful garden courtyard with pool is a great place to come back to after a long day of activities. The staff are all very friendly and very helpful in suggesting things to do and how to get there. We will definitely stay at Casa Quetzal the next time we are in Valladolid.

This well hidden jewel was selected by Balamkaan, the Yucatecan travel agency (based in Merida) who arranged and guided for us a wonderful private tour of Yucatan. It is neighbour to the Convent and located five blocks from the Plaza and Cathedral (maximum 8 minute walk in a very safe environment). Our room was large, with good A/C, comfortable beds, and a huge, nicely decorated bath room. Decoration is simple but with very good taste (beautiful wooden doors), large pieces of coral and shells in the bathroom and all amenities (or more) you would expect normally in a 3 stars hotel. All rooms are around a lush garden/patio with a pool and are absolutely quiet. Breakfast in the morning was à la carte, served in the garden from 7 am (good when you want to hit the road early). Price (85 USD including breakfast for two) was very reasonable for the quality offered. Thank you to Balamkaan for letting us stay there rather than in the hotels in the noisy environment of the Plaza. It is typical of the interesting and innovative suggestions they make to ensure that your travel is a real success. A night in lovely Valladolid is a very smart way to interrupt the long journey after the Puuc route when you drive back to the Riviera Maya.

We stayed at this hotel in January 2012 and whilst this is supposed to be high season, there were hardly any other people at the hotel. Once the staff had clocked off we felt like the only people there which could have been nice but felt a little eerie (there is no 24 hour reception). I would agree with other reviewers about the noise of the cockerel next door - it didn't restrict itself to just dawn either! However, it didn't bother us too much. The room was spacious with two queen (ish) size beds but a little dark as other reviewers mention. The courtyard is full of life, night and day! We saw what we think was a bandicoot pop down for a snack, birds bathing in the fountain, plenty of weird-looking caterpillars, gechos and of course a good few cats (one friendly ginge).
And now for the pool...we did attempt to go in it, but the water was really very cold and it was full of debris from the overhanging trees although definitely not dirty. The staff did clean it out every now and again but whilst they turned the fountain on for us when they saw us getting in, they didn't attempt to clear the debris that time (which would have quickly replenished tself anyway).
Location wise, the hotel is at least a 10 minute walk from the main square and there aren't a lot of restaurants near to it of any note. Valladolid itself is very sleepy. We stayed three nights and this was at least one night too long. It is handy for Chichen Itza and we made it there before the crowds so it almost looks like we had it to ourselves in the photos! We took taxis to Chichen Itza and Ek Balaam, which reception staff arranged for us and they turned up very promptly (and were very reasonably priced).
Overall this hotel is quaint, pretty and quiet (apart from the cockerel!) with no whistles and bells.

This was one of my favorite places in the Yucatan - a beautiful relaxing courtyard, furniture and decorations using traditional Mexican crafts - spacious rooms with comfortable beds, good breakfast and very personable staff. It's located just about a 10 minute walk from the main town square.

We travelled around the Yucatan peninsula for a week and stopped at Quetzal for 2 nights. Our main interest was to spend some time in the city and go see the Ek Balam ruins. The Casa is built with a central area with lots of trees, plants, pathways....a lot of excellent relaxing features. If the pool is dirty it's the falling leaves from the trees but I've seen workers continuously attempting to sieve them out. That's what you get for having trees all over. Don't get the reviews fool you when they say it was dirty. The center area is designed to emulate a tropical forest athmosphere and they continuously work at removing dead leaves. The setting is marvelous and the features attracts moist air with ample shade areas that are refreshing after a walk in the city. Our room was at the upper corner level and it was very tastefully decorated with 2 rocking chairs, a very comfortable king size bed, plenty of space for me and my wife. They even had a small veranda with 2 chairs but it was overlooking the neigbours which was a classic array of rumbled back yards with different sheds, tins, hen houses and such....so the view was not that spectacular. We had a barking dog annoy us for a while and the rooster was quite early but with the A/C on, we were comfortable enough just to enjoy the noise contrasts and go with the flow. The casa is situated in front of this very old monastary which is open for visit, it's 2 to 3 houses form the city hospital and there is a very nice area with trees and park benches which the locals uses in the evenings. The whole area gives an athmosphere of a peacefull community and it's not more than 15 minutes walking distance from the city center. Keep in mind you're in the middle of the city so outside noises are to be expected. We were never bothered enough to be deceived by it. The Casa has 2 parking spots in the front of the entrance which we used during our stay and they also have a fenced in area if you want more overnight security for your car. We never felt threaten to use the fenced area, we enjoyed having our car at the front entrance. The city is endearing, everything you read about it's charm is true.
We had breakfast at the Casa both days and loved it. The meny was simple, extremely tasty and the setting was most relaxing. WIFI was working everywhere and we enjoyed a very nice evening with another couple the last night, although the sound in the center section carries a lot and we were politly told to quiet our conversation for the sanctity of the other guests. So if you intend to stay for the evening, best plan it quietly....
The city quiets down mid evening so I'm unsure about a late night stroll from a bar or such but during the regular hours, all places we visited felt safe.
The casa offers keys for all acess and if the doors are closed, the keys will get you in, wether it's the main entrance or the parking area....
I would recommend this place to anyone that has common sense when travelling.....

When I booked this hotel, I booked paying a bit more a nice cabana. But when we arrived the gave us a anonymous room. That was big and clean but was old and it was smelling musty.
When I asked them about it, they apologized but there was no other rooms and the one I booked it was already taken form another gust that was staying there more days.
The gave me back the difference between the rooms (just 10 dollars), but I didn't like the fact that they didin't told me anything about what happend.
They didn't offered us even the breakfast and we left the day after.
The hotel is nice, a nice garden, but we didn't enjoy it.
And it's not in the middle of the city... you have to walk 15 minutes.
And definitively I'd a boutique hotel.
