I love the Luxe and had been a member for a couple of years before the recent take-over. I'm very pleased to say that the changes so far all seem to have been to the good and the lovely, quirky cinema experience that was always the Luxe's forte has, by and large, been maintained. (I will always mourn the loss of the elicit interval, I'm afraid, as I really miss the chance for a comfort break...it's an old lady thing!)
The Luxe is so friendly and offers very good value - I was recently horrified by the cost of a trip to 'the other cinema' in town. (We specifically wanted to take our great niece and great nephew to see 'Paddington 2' and its run had finished at the Luxe.) The cost of the seats there compared to the Luxe seemed quite high, especially for a film that was not in its 'first flush' of screenings. However, it was the cost of refreshments that I really objected to - the mark-up on drinks and sweets was, to my mind, an absolute rip-off and left me feeling quite irritated. If customers smuggle in drinks or snacks at that venue then I think the company only have their own greed to blame.
No need to smuggle anything at the Luxe, though. The selection of refreshments available is good and the prices are fair. A lovely coffee and a muffin, especially if it's salted caramel, is all part and parcel of the Luxe experience and if you need a mid-screening top-up, choose the premium seats and you can have your refreshments brought to you by one of the friendly and knowledgeable staff.
I would urge anyone who's not been to the Luxe to give it a try. The seating is very spacious and comfortable, the sound and picture quality are excellent (far superior to 'the other place'), the welcome is friendly and a visit there is just a lovely, relaxed experience. Online booking is extremely easy and Nathan's regular newsletters keep customers up-to-date with the refurbishments and forthcoming events.
This little gem of a cinema, and the staff who work so hard to make it a continuing success, deserve our recognition and support. I sincerely hope the Luxe continues to go from strength to strength.
