Would like to say what the food is like but can’t because we arrived at 8.45 to be informed that they don’t take orders after 7.30. Shame because the place looked nice and their was a friendly atmosphere.

Every time we come to Cumbria for a break we head to the Captain Nelson for our lunch, great food, great friendly atmosphere, helpful staff & very large portions. I have a soft spot for the fish, it’s massive & the best fish I’ve had.
I’m back in Cumbria next month lucky enough & will be going back

Arrived just as kitchen was closing.... no problem. We’re immediatly welcomed & offered a menu. Drinks order brought to table. Service was faultless.
Food was great. Huge fish & chips with mushy peas.
Good home cooking. Actually saw the batter being made by the chef.... adding bear to the mix from the pump. Good price too.
We have 3 dogs. They were given water & lots of attention. Will be coming again.

Called in after a local elderly chap recommend here for eats. Pleased we followed his advice.
Lovely pub next to the harbour loads of free parking nearby.
We both opted for fish and chips. When it arrived we couldn't believe the size of the haddock one portion would have fed us both for a week. The batter on the haddock was absolutely outstanding, best I've tasted. The fish tasted devine and fresh as can be. The chips were really good as well.
Would I return here, most definitely
Would I recommend , again most definitely.
There were lots of others eating here as well which speaks volumes

Excellent pub. Great meals (except limited gluten free - jacket spuds only). Worth taking cash as card payments/ wifi doesn’t always work.

Dropped in for a snack on Sunday lunch time unfortunately they only did full meals. Having said that we ordered the Sunday turkey dinner and its was really good but there was far to much for us it was huge so only order this if you have a very health appetite. Really pleasant and friendly staff. The owner did say if we would have asked he would have done us smaller portions. Well worth a visit if you are in town.

Maryport, on Cumbrias west coast, definitely a hidden gem. A lovely costal fishing town with great bars and restaurants. We went to Captain Nelsons Tavern last night. A welcoming, family run bar/restaurant where we had the best wood fired pizzas EVER!. Well worth a visit.

Went to Maryport to visit the aquarium, then after that wanted to find a nice pub for some lunch. Came across Captain Nelson Tavern. The staff were great and the food was amazing. Portion sizes were very generous. Well worth the money. Will visit again some time when back here for holidays. Also this place was great for young children. We have a one year old and a two year old and they have a menu for kids.
