My children booked this for my birthday. It was an old railway carriage made into a bedroom about an 8 minute walk from the hotel. Very well done and very well appointed, certainly a different experience to your normal hotel room. You enter through the stationmaster's house so it was very peaceful. The deal was for bed and breakfast. But at £185 I was surprised to find that you had to pay extra for anything cooked. A full English breakfast was another £9.50.

Room Tip: Wifi was available in the main hotel

Stayed in one of the delightful hotel cottages 10th to 12th June, well appointed clean and comfortable. However booked dinner in the hotel on the evening of 11th and what a disappointment, starters very unexciting and three of our six main courses had to be sent back as they were poor. The service at the table was polite and helpful but there was a great reluctance to use the air conditioning on what was a very warm evening in the garden room. Overall dinner was a very disappointing experience, far from what we had expected and hoped for and I would have to be persuaded to return.

We had our wedding reception at The Hoste on 2nd June. This was supposed to be one of the most special times in our lives but we have come away feeling very angry and upset at the farce we experienced. We booked the reception through Erica [--] the events coordinator, at first meeting nothing was too much trouble, we explained as we are creative people we wanted to decorate the room ourselves and would want the room the day before to avoid too much stress. "We will make it happen" were her exact words, "I want to know where you are at all times on your day" This couldn't be further from the truth. Looking back the turnaround in attitude came when we dared to question the price of their so called mocktail drinks for our arrival drinks. She swiftly offered us an insulting alternative and said 'I'm sure the barman will help you'. After this we were made to feel a nuisance and the email communication became more abrupt.
We arrived on the day only to be told we couldn't go in the room until 5pm but there was no reason for this as it was empty, no sign of Erica she was far too busy avoiding us. After having the embarrassment of having to complain to the manager they gave us access, this was our wedding eve and we were supposed to be in relaxed mode - far from it. The tables they wanted to give us were unsuitable for the displays we had, less than 3ft wide and the staff made us feel we were being awkward and a nuisance. Everything now seemed like a battle, Erica was nowhere to be seen and she sent her assistant Amy, who was lovely but somewhat unfairly dropped in it. We worked until 9.30pm on our wedding eve to get the room ready with little help from anyone at the hotel, which obviously not the plan we had in mind for our special day. On our wedding day we had our ceremony at Holkham Temple, the coordinate there was amazing and couldn't do enough for us, it was a pity it wasn't matched at the Hoste. We arrived for our reception to our shock they had the heating on full blast and all the peonys we had carefully arranged the night before were wide open and ruined. The poor excuse for a mocktail at £6 each were laughable. The only good thing we can say is the food was of good standard but in no way made up for the upset we were experiencing. We had to ask for coffee after the meal that were included and we never received the petit fours included. The next morning we were upset to find our keepsake chocolate favours had either been thrown away or eaten by the staff. The list goes on. We didn't even get so much of a congratulation from Erica on the day or any other time infact which we find is quite disgusting. Being in the wedding industry ourselves we have experienced customer service at it's best, no matter how much the customer is spending - this is far from a good example of customer service. The bill came and they had the gall to charge 10% service charge adding insult to injury.
Our advice do not book your reception here as they are far too important unless of course you are prepared to open your wallet wide.

Martin d, Manager at The Hoste, responded to this reviewResponded July 15, 2016

Dear Mr Whitmore,

We were surprised to read your lengthy post following the small private dinner you held to celebrate your marriage at Holkham last month. I have purposely taken some
time to respond as I wanted to review all the previous communication with you regarding your booking. I understand that all of the issues you raise were discussed and highlighted in advance by our events and front-of-house teams. On arriving at The Hoste Senior Managers were involved prior to you checking in and believed they had gone out of their way to accommodate and resolve any issues you had at that time. I was particularly surprised to read such negativity about the Events Manager, Erica, who regularly receives glowing complements for delivering such a high standard of service. It is without question that The Hoste treats every event, whether it’s a large wedding or small private dinner such as yours, with the same level of service and attention.

If you would like to discuss this matter even further, please contact myself Martin de Sousa on 01328 738777 (Head of Guest Services)

The hotel was excellent in some ways and disappointing in others. Firstly we stayed in suite 22, the decor was very strange with gaudy gold furniture! It was not worth the price tag and the bathroom was strangely laid out with a separate toilet, Shower etc This was at odds with the rest of the hotel (indeed the room we stayed in on a previous visit) which were all tastefully decorated. We checked in late on Friday night nobody offered to assist us with our bags (the same when we left). We were not offered a newspaper which is strange when you are staying on a Sunday morning. We wanted to book a treatment in the spa to be told it was fully booked on both days. It would have been useful to,have been told about advanced booking when the reservation was made. The spa wasn't even mentioned and we didn't know the hotel had one otherwise we would have done this. Lastly the breakfast finished too early (especially on Sun morning). We arrived at the later part of the sitting and the staff were very grumpy. On both occasions they cleared the buffet away without notifying guests. All in all,it was a pleasant stay but the hotel could be improved on.

Room Tip: I would not stay in room 22 unless you like tacky furniture and like waking up to the sound of bottles being thrown into a bin!
