We have just returned from a very relaxing week in Cornwall, staying at Clottage in Flushing. This is our first stay in this part of Cornwall. Flushing is a delightful village with a couple of good pubs and a good restaurant on the quay. A big selling point for Flushing and the location of Clottage is the ferry which departs fairly regularly for Falmouth. The village has a small play park and is very quiet as it is not a through road village. Clottage has parking on the quay which is very useful as without it, parking could be hit or miss. I would not recommend renting in the village without a dedicated parking space.
The cottage is fairly compact but there was room for my wife and I and our children (3 & 5) and for a few days their grandfather also stayed.
The downstairs has a coney sitting room with window seats looking out to the water literally across the road. You get a lovely view from the front windows of the boats, swans and Falmouth on the other side.
The dining area has a patin door leading to a small courtyard area which also has an outside table. This is quite shaded but we did manage to breakfast outside once as the sun was high enough to warm up the back of the house, we found it was too chilly in the evening and in any case the sun sets at the front and we preferred to sit on the front step and watch the world go by.
The kitchen is tiny, if you are going to Clottage, I would urge you to eat out as often as possible. I cooked a couple of times for the kids but really struggled, there is also a lack of equipment to really do much. In any case, with 2 pubs within a couple of minutes walk, there is no need to cook!
Upstairs, the bathroom is big, with an electric shower and a large bath. There are 3 bedrooms. One room with bunks is literally big enough just for the bed and access to the ladder, but it was all we needed. The twin room was a good size. The master bedroom had a lovely view to the water and a very comfy Tempur mattress. The room is not huge, but it was lovely to lie on the bed and watch the boats.
The main issue we had with the space, was not having anywhere to store our luggage (surpassing how much you need for a family of 4 when the weather is so variable!)
Clottage is a lovely little house, I felt that it was getting a bit ragged around the edges and needed an end of season spruce and deep clean to get it ready for a new intake.
The company that rented the property (Flushing Holiday Cottages) were very professional and excellent with communication throughout. I would use them again.
The proximity to other parts of Cornwall is great, we were able to get the Lizard, Newquay, St Mawes and St Ives very easily. Of course, Falmouth is easy to access, although despite our excitement at having the ferry on our doorstep, because it stops for 2 hours over lunch, we found it was easier to drive to Falmouth in the morning and have the flexibility of the car (especially as we had very mixed weather).
Flushing and this part of Cornwall is lovely, it would be hard not to enjoy yourself whatever the weather!
