Masseria Fortificata Donnaloia
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Capitolo
Reviewed 29 August 2014

This is on the slopes down to Capitolo, a beach suburb of Monopoli. It is very pretty and well- maintained, in a good position and with a charming pool and courtyard. The dining/breakfast area outside looks like a theatre set with the deep blue sea in the middle distance. And the breakfasts were easily the best of the four Italian hotels we stayed in this summer: a huge range of fresh fruit, a variety of local pastries, many fruit juices and all the conventional cerealy stuff too. Plus proper coffee brought by waiters which is not common enough.
It's a little way from the sea but the masseria offers a free shuttle to a beach 2km away - or free parking. - plus sun beds and umbrellas there. There seems to be an infinite supply of lovely beach towels...
The rooms are small and dark but we begin to think that is standard for Masseria style hotels - after all, they were fortified buildings. The restaurant is OK but formal, expensive and slightly drear inside (it rained the night we ate in) and not amusing compared to other local places. The staff are charming and helpful although no-one seems assigned to bar duties - shame as there were several places around the hotel and on the roof - from where you can watch the sunset - which were perfect for early evening drinks.

PS On wifi - as with other Masserias, the walls are just too thick for in room wifi but there was excellent free wifi around the pool and in the courtyard.

Room Tip: If there are any which are a bit lighter, that might be nice.

If this hotel fronted directly onto a beach it would be just about perfect. (It would also be more expensive!)

As it is, located just a 2 minute drive from their private beach, but set back from a quiet road up a long, tree-lined driveway, the hotel looks like a good quality hotel as you approach.

The staff are helpful, friendly and attentive.

The first room was a little disappointing as it was smaller than anticipated and with a new, wooden ceiling as opposed to the appealing stone vaulted ceilings that look so enticing on their website.

After two days we moved to a different room that was spacious and beautifully appointed.

Breakfast was simple, the same every morning, but with a range of pastries, cheese, meats, fresh fruit, a variety of juices and coffee it was a relaxed, pleasant start to the day.

We only ate dinner once in the restaurant and prices are as you would expect for a good quality authentic Italian though I think the menu is a little limited considering the hotel portrays itself as a restaurant open to non-residents too.

The lobby, grounds and various outdoor areas are clean and tidy with lots of attractive flowers and trees. There was a spectacular lightning storm one even which we watched from the upper terrace ....

The private beach area is a few hundred metres away, but there's plenty of parking and the beach and beach bar staff are smiley and helpful.

You need a car ...

It's not cheap, but it is good quality, though I think 5 Stars is probably a little overstating it.

Room Tip: avoid the wooden ceiling rooms on the lower ground room of the wing (not the main building). The upp...

We stayed at the Masseria Donnaloia for 8 nights on our 3 week holiday in Italy and we loved it!
The service was excellent and our 9 month baby was treated like a princess by the staff, especially at the restaurant. As soon as she dropped a toy they were there to pick it up. The reception staff, the poolside staff and cleaners all did a tremendous job.
They hotel has turndown service.
The breakfast is a feast in the morning with everything from fresh fruit and yoghurt to cakes and croissants.
We dined at the restaurant 4 nights and would highly recommend it.
The hotel is close to the beach, less than 5 min walk and they also provide a shuttle service to a private beach 2 km away which is amazing. The staff there is very helpful, caring and friendly.

Lovely hotel , peaceful and very helpful staff. We stayed in a large room for 8 nights, facing the sea. Everyone in the staff are there to help you and nothing is impossible just ask and they will help you with it.

The hotel is about 2 minutes walk from the sea.

Will definitely go back

A beautiful old building to stay in. Built around 1700 all the rooms are totally different, mostly with their own entrance from the court yard. All mod cons tastefully decorated. The service is excellent. The breakfast table was groaning with goodies and gluten free bread on demand. We stayed for dinner the first night and it was so good that we ate here most other evenings too. They even made special pasta for coeliacs. A shuttle bus would take you to a private beach. But there is so much to see in the region that we made do with the beautiful pool area.

Good location, lovely buildings. Nice swimming pool and a private beach nearby.
Variety styles of bedroom.
The staff were professional, friendly and helpful.
The evening meal was very good but we thought the breakfast rather poor for that class of accommodation.

Room Tip: Our bedroom was lovely but had no windows. The air-conditioning wasn't on, They had no fans. Whe...
