It is small even that you can see all of the museum and still stop and read the information without feeling rushed, yet it includes a large assortment of artists, periods and techniques. I didn't feel overwhelmed with too many paintings and too much information. I learned a great deal about what influenced the artist and stories behind the paintings.

I would take any negative review for the museum written in the past 6 months with a grain of salt, since the museum is undergoing extensive renovations to their complete facility. Rather than totally close down, they have an abbreviated collection on display. Their permanent collection is striking, with work by Emil Nolde, Matisse, and others. There is a Chihuly exhibit while the renovations are going on, but yes - it is small, and it doesn't take long to tour. The exhibit space is probably 1/20 the size of the total museum when renovations aren't being done. I recommend anyone who was disappointed with the museum to return in 2011 to see it in its full glory. There is a video display in the lobby with details and pictures of the projected completion. I'm excited to see it, and I've been coming to the museum since I was a child.

(When the Palette Cafe is open again, it's fantastic!)

We went to the Columbus Museum of Art today specifically to see the Chihuly exhibit. Knowing how spectacular these showings can be (e.g. Desert Botanical Garden/Phoenix), the CMA exhibit was extremely disappointing and can be viewed in 5 minutes. However, we then went to the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus for the "Chihuly Reimagined" exhibit and I would HIGHLY recommend this. It was wonderful.

CMA was OK. Some nice exhibits but not good for a kids day out. We had heard that the museum had some nice exhibits for kids to include some hand's on exhibits.

That wasn't the case. There were only two exhibits that our kids really enjoyed and they only took about 5 mins each. I would say it would be more age appropriate for kids in the 9-12 year range.

The overall collection is quite good for a museum of its size, but the only absolute must-see is for those interested in expressionism and modern art: a stunning, fascinating, somewhat gruesome, and jaw dropping piece by Belgian painter James Ensor. Worth a visit for that one alone.
