“Brightland Resorts, Matheran - Awful place”
Reviewed 5 May 2012

Brightland Resorts, Matheran is a very expensive resort for the quality of both its boarding and lodging. We checked it recently for a three days family package for a cost of nearly Rs. 20,000/- We have been going to Matheran every year for the last 15 years and have stayed at several different resorts and hotels. We had stayed at Brightland earlier also about 11 years back but it was quite good in those days. Their property is huge but this stay was very painful for various reasons. We had to followup with the staff several time to get the rooms cleaned. Still the TV, Wardrobe and tables were very shabby. The quality of bed-sheets, mattresses and pillows was awful. For the three days stay, we were able to get the sheets changed only once and that too after a lot of followup. Basic things like soaps, mosquito mats etc. was provided after a lot of followup. These things are expected to be done on its own and I have never had to followup for these in other similar cost-wise hotels in Matheran and other holiday destinations around Mumbai and elsewhere. The quality of the staff at the reception, house-keeping and dining hall was pathetic. They were hand-picked villagers and most of them were very young and raw and had no idea on how to talk to guests or how to handle their requirement. The worst part was their food. As their package includes meals, they made sure that it was worst to ensure their maximum profitability. The selection of dishes very clearly showed how much they value controlling their cost. To top most items were made horribly with maximum chilly possible. This was to ensure that you are not able to eat beyond a point. The desert was bad with mostly was some diluted milk preparations. You would experience a similar meal if you were to attend the marriage of one of your servants (no offence meant), as they can’t afford it and you would go there to fulfil a social obligation and would come back happy after giving them a reasonable amount of gift. There guys are not similar. You have paid through your nose and they are cheating you by giving you sub-standard food. A complaint to them entailed an immediate response that no one else is complaining. We later realised after checking with other guests that even they are facing issues and are complaining to no avail and we also got to know that the owner is no longer running the place himself but he has let it out to a person for a lump sum annual deal. The guy running the show is therefore out to make a quick buck as his credibility is not at stake. Moreover, we found that many of the rooms have been given as company guest houses for long term stay and cheap rates and so he is fleecing individual guests like us. Guests coming to the several company guest houses will not find the treatment shabby as they are not paying anything. Moreover many would not be aware about the services to expect from such an expensive place. They were also holding a one day Sales event for 100+ young Sales personnel of a company who created such a nuisance which I cannot describe here. Net net the place is best avoidable unless your company is putting you up there and even then you must go back and complain to your Admin / HR.

We have gone through our records and have no records of this visitor having visited our resort, the details given in by this visitor seems from a competitor and is very unlikely and to misguide other travelers and defame our resort.

Our resort is rather a one up resort in line with the other hotels in matheran. The food quality has always been the best and for ages we have been living up to the expectations of various guest catering to the needs of Gujarati, Parsi, Punjabi, Goan food etc. Brightlands is the only resort in matheran serving the guest with non-vegetarian delicacies.

The Resort is a heritage property with mainly cottage structure in its natural form with modern emenities within.

I've stayed at this hotel on a few occasions but the last time I was here I was a little disappointed to see that the hotel is not as well maintained as it used to be. They have taken rustic to another level - and I don't mean that in a good way...

While I agree that some of the other hotels are much worse, as one of the oldest and supposedly best hotels in Matheran, I expected a slightly better staying experience.

The food was just okay, nothing great but not horrible. The rooms were clean, if anything a little musty. The grounds need severe maintenance.

Not sure about this place anymore. Perhaps a no henceforth

Located in the center of India's No pollution city of Matheran, Brightlands Resort is one of the oldest property in the Hillock city of Matheran. It is overpriced and rather poorly maintained. The rooms are large but need big time maintenance. The baths are extremely small and rather misfit to the size of the rooms. The furniture needs a desperate change. The open spaces are good for children to feel free and at home. The restaurant is popular for its spread. The linen however like the rest of the hotel needs a change. The wading pool is good for the kids. In the evenings however the resort transforms itself into a better place to be in. There are plenty of engagements for the kids from movies to magic shows to puppet shows and the discos. The evening buffet, when laid in the lawns, is of very good quality and variety.

Room Tip: Choose from the deluxe rooms in the front which are slightly better than the ones in the rear of the...

Ohh, wish I would have read the reviews about this hotel, before I booked it.
This hotel need to change everything.
Starting from room interior painting, washroom equipments, beds & mattresses, everything…..
We never had food in this hotel, so can’t comment on it.
Fortunately, we changed hotel next day.

Good architect & a good manager is what it needed.

We have not had any guests by this name and all our packages are with food. Hence it is highly impossible for checking out the very next day.

Brightlands has run down both with time and change of owners. It was much better when Adi Bharucha was there. Rooms are spacious but need a lot of pepping up. Breakfast and the meals are very palatable. Staff very friendly and helpful. The room I lived in had a TV and a Fridge. Pool is small but clean. Evenings have some entertainment. Nothing much to write about.

Room Tip: Honey mooners book a room away from the pool!!!

we went for a 3N /4D stay here.
the hotel is simple but clean .they have a small pool where the kids enjoyed themselves .
the rooms are spread out all over the property so it does offer some privacy.
rooms are basic and had a tv and fridge (though very old but still worked great . )with clean sheets and pillows (thankfully ) .the rooms and bathrooms were well cleaned each morning.
dont expect a luxurious stay here or anywhere in matheran for that matter, i have been a regular in matheran since last 15 years and have stayed in quite a few places.they had entertainment options in the evenings such as a magic show, fire show , tambola etc and DJ playing music in the evenings till dinner,.
The dining options are nice especially for the meat eaters with chicken and mutton dishes with every meal.
also the breakfeast was basic but had a good variety of eggs, toast jam , idli , poha, upma, puri bhaji, tea coffee etc,.
The staff at the restaurant is very polite and does cater to your individual needs.would rate it 3.5 / 5 for the overall stay.

Room Tip: choose a room away from the pool if u like privacy and peace around you
