Having visited four times over the last seven years, my family has always found the Brickwall Hotel to be a most pleasant hotel.

The staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms comfortable. Though the highlight has always been the excellent food.

This time, we were pleased to see that the rooms have been spruced up and much of the older furniture either reupholstered or replaced. Very comfortable king sized beds were in evidence.

The staff were (with one exception) very helpful and both Julio the manager and Mr Pollio (owner) made us feel welcome.

However, this time we had some problems with our Saturday breakfast and dinner.

My children ordered scrambled eggs for breakfast and when it arrived neither tucked in with their normal gusto. When we tasted it there was a definite "burned" flavour as if the pot had "caught" and tainted the batch prepared. We pointed this out to the waiter who did not offer an alternative.

For my wife's birthday dinner on Saturday our party sat down to a very pleasant series of starters. When the mains arrived there were a few problems (4/7). The bream and cod had a very strong odour more akin to frozen Pollock this made my daughter feel a little off colour and she ate little (in spite of being a great fan of cod) Three of us ordered the duckling and two of the three servings were extremely tough and over-cooked. I asked for them to be replaced and this was effected but this is not quite the high standard one usually experiences here.

In their defence, the staff were being taxed by a rather confrontational man attached to a wedding party and this may have had a knock-on effect.

Last time I rated the hotel a 4/5 because of the slightly worn rooms mitigated by excellent food. Now the rooms have been renovated but the dining side has slipped. I would like to rate rooms at a 4.5 and the dining a 3 but cannot be so specific!

Overall our stay was, as usual, enjoyable but for reviews to be valuable, honesty is essential.

Dear Porkmann, We thank you for your feedback, and were pleased to hear all the positive comments from you. However we are disappointed to hear that your stay with us didn't meet all of your expectations. It is of great concern to us that you feel issues weren't resolved to your satisfaction at the time. The comfort and satisfaction of our guests during their stay is of paramount importance to us, and we would therefore invite you to make contact with us direct to discuss any of the issues for us to endeavour to explain further to our staff, and we hope to welcome you here again soon.

Just arrived home after a wonderful 4 night stay at the Brickwall Hotel. Travelled with my wife and her 87year old parents and all agreed that it was a most perfect break in a lovely hotel. Booking the rooms with our specific requirements were fully met, the meals were all excellent easily satisfying a rather fussy 87 year old, staff were fantastic and so very friendly with nothing too much trouble for them. We had some problems with a local Taxi company who picked up an Auntie from Bexhill 2 hours late who was joining us for supper, once she arrived Guiseppe and his staff made such a fuss of her and really made the evening ending up a wonderful night. To top it off though Guiseppe made sure that our Auntie got home safely. All staff excellent but special mention to Ruslan, Maria and Giulio who exceeded expectations.
All in all a wonderful hotel, excellent staff, lovely meals and a must for us to return.

Room Tip: Book early and speak to the hotel

Upon arrival the receptionist was extremely attentive - we had booked a twin room as it was the only room left and the receptionist did her up most to make it in to a double, which wasn't so really necessary but very nice of her to help. Rooms are clean and well maintained! This is not a high end hotel but very much a good value old English inn. a feel pleasure to have stayed and plan to return to Hastings and stay with the brick wall again.

In past years, this Hotel has been a MUST! Now it must review in which direction it is going. If it is to be "Luxury," it needs to address : 1) Why is there no Bar/Sandwich/Baked Potato Menu for anybody in the Main Restaurant that cannot manage the full Dinner? 2) Why are some main courses in the evening - eg. sliced beef, so uninteresting? 3) Why are some serving staff so unhelpful ? 4) Why do those same serving staff grumble if a table for four becomes for 5 or one for three, for 4...simple !? 5) Why have staff sometimes have to be found?
On the other hand, this Hotel boasts a splendid outside Pool, really well-maintained. Also its Breakfasts are graced with real fresh strawberries, real fresh pineapple. Prais be! Not all bedrooms yet have a Clock. & Some newer rooms remain a bit characterless.
One final observation : never , ever, give the impression - even the mistaken impression - that some Customers are less valuable because they are not spending so much on Wine!
