Had a lovely family holiday here at the Rowden Mill Station. The old station building has been lovingly restored to the smallest detail and we were delighted with the place. It really does feel like being transported to a Victorian-era home. The kitchen is very well equipped, the beds are comfortable, and the heating works - much appreciated in November! We spent our evenings sitting in front of the fire in the drawing room where there is plenty of space for both conversation and children playing.
Our friendly hosts gave us an extensive tour of the grounds, showing us the old animal pens and the weighing station as well as the quaint Parcel House which is also available for accommodation. They were very informative about the history of the grounds and great at instructing the kids on safety guidelines on the property.
The views across the tracks to rolling green hills was stunning and we enjoyed the walks in the area past cows, horses, and sheep. A short car ride takes you to the Bromyard Downs where we went for a longer hike, complete with a double rainbow on the horizon and a delicious meal at the Royal Oak.
We managed to have one meal outdoors on the platform in spite of chilly weather and look forward to coming back in the summer when cosy family dinners on the platform must be a treat!
Be aware that the drop from the station platform to the tracks is considerable. You should consider carefully whether your kids are able to follow safety instructions. If not, you may find yourself with your heart in your mouth every time they are on the platform. That said, our kids quickly learned to stay at a safe distance from the edge or to play down on the (level of the) tracks (doesn't that sound reassuring?).
Well worth a visit!!
