“Never think of booking this hotel...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2011

The hotel is very well placed in the central location. However, the hotel staff cares and respects least to the customers. Besides, the bar is in the ground floor, which will be crowded over night and is extremely noisy to have a nap throughout the night.

In addition, the hotel rooms are too small with no phone to call the reception, television with no remote, hot water works occasionally. Beds are terrible with non closeable windows and doors.

My advise for travelers of Isle of wight would be to try booking hotels at Sandown beach front area.

Room Tip: All rooms are horrible.

Stayed here last weekend, woke up 2 hours after going to bed, arms covered in bites, bites that Doctors confirmed today are bed bugs. Called the owner (who doesn't live there) who basically said I could'nt prove a thing (great customer relations!!), but the matress and the room looked and felt like it was 50 years old and theres no way to check inside the matress!

So bascially I paid £30 for a rubbish night sleep, really sore painfully arms (over 40 bites) and to be blanked by the landlord - who from his tone has that type of phone call often.

My personal experience of the place was painfully aweful - and did'nt even get an apology.

If you do decide to stay here - once you see it and feel the bites, then you'd wish you'd listened to this advise.

We usualy do not respond to reviews as we believe everyone is entitled to their individual opinion, unfortunately every now and again someone decides to write unfounded alegations for whatever reason. I will note that with over 1000 guests staying a year that 6 bad reviews in 8 years isn't particularly dramatic.

This guest spent the day in the forrest paint balling and claimed to have over 40 bites after 2 hours sleep, the next morning he demanded a full refund claiming bed bugs had bitten him but possibly failed to observe the fact that a simple can of insect repellant may prevent insect bites occuring especialy from the forrest they also may take some time to react, my son has just returned from a school camping trip and part of the inventory required for the trip was that of insect repellant.

He shared a room with two other people who alternatively didn't recieve any such bites and paid £20 per night not £30 per night. All of our matteresses are covered with a protective hygene sheet and all of our laundry is supplied by a national laundry chain.

We have investigated the complaint and been told by a proffesional company that it's unfounded the room was checked and nothing found to substantiate these claims, we are upset by the allegations but understand that some people can jump to conclusions before investigating all possibilities.

spent a weekend at the crown hotel, wasnt expecting alot as had read previous reviews but did expect it to be at least a bit clean. The one good thing going for it is the excellent location, near to everything. The actual pub not too bad, but as you go up the stairs to the rooms above things go from bad to worse. Stairs filthy, dont thing they've been hoovered ever. On our floor big hole in the ceiling. Room decent size but badly in need of a revamp and a clean, bedding was clean though. Didnt have ensuite so bath, shower and separate loo down the corridor. Baths did look new but actual bathroom dirty and mouldy. Flushed loo one morning and it flooded all over floor, never moved so quick, had to use loo in pub downstairs. All in all great location but badly in need of a good scrub and paint job, not a pleasant place to stay.

What can I say turned up late 11pm and still got a room. was greated with freindly service. Payed for 2 nites. £20 pre person per nite (good for students on a low budget). Me and my bro went costing us £80. Would of cost £150 round the corner. But being on cowes fireworks nite is what made it perfect most hotel's were fully booked or charging silly prices, the shower bath and toilet were pretty basic and worked fine. Got a very quite nite's sleep only drunken banter from outside other wise perfect. they have a side door as well so u can come as u please late at nite. all in all a great stay and wicked bargin. 10/10

Stayed here with my wife and two friends for three days .For the price it was fantastic .After reading the other reports we were a little worried but at £50 a en-suite room in August we thought we would give it a try .If you want 4-5 star this is not your place but then it doesnt try to kid you either,as when we rang it was explained what the Crown is.
The room we had no 9 was fine, big with shower ,toilet , tea and coffe making and a Tv, and as the building is right in the centre of town its so easy to get everywhere. Its clean (didnt see any banned list in the bar area which is well kept with a dinning room which has a great 12ft screen for sport ,there is a pool room which allso has a 10ft sreen plus there are tvs all round a circular bar.
We met the owners who have been there for two years and found them to be very helpful with places to visit and local information.
All in all this is not the Hilton but then they dont charge high rates, if your looking for Value for money then we recommend the Crown Hotel, which is a large pub with 13 rooms over, and a good place to stay

Firslty let us make this clear. I do not know the exact law for classifying places to stay but this place should not be called a hotel in any sense of the word. It is no more than a pub with rooms upstairs. On arrival, the pub was not very clean and although all pubs smell slightly of booze and cigarettes, this was on the worse end of the scale for staleness. While checking in, my partner and I noticed that on the wall was a long list of peoples names who had been banned for life. This was a very ominous start to our stay and didnt make us feel entirely safe about the imagined average clientelle. We also had to pay in advance which is unusual. We proceeded to check into our rooms. here is where the problems started. We had the 'best room' according to the man who booked us in over the room.
Now let me describe it.
The room was small, for the price! The bed was a small double, barely big enough for one large adult.
The mattress was lumpy and springy. Later that night when we were too hot, the windows' sash cords were broken and we had to use our coat to leave a small gap at the bottom, we removed the duvet, so we could sleep with just the sheet, to find the most yellow, stained and tattered duvet I have ever laid my eyes on. We dared not look at the mattress below the base sheet. There were no curtains and in place of them was a white metal louvre blind which let in all the light at 4.30 am in the morning waking us up. The bathroom shower head was not only broken but the water pressure in the place was so low that only a trickle came out of it.
The room was very noisy, both from the pub being on the street and that the communal toilet / shared bathroom were right outside the room. The same low pressure meant that the outside loo did not flush well and we got a wonderful waft of human waste every time someone went to the toilet. When i tried to raise my concerns to a member of staff, the manger once fetched was immediatley very aggresive, did not even stop to ask me what my issues were, told me "he didt care and I could check out if I wanted" and walked away before I could even say anything. I did check out and into the first Hotel, I found available and had wonderful service, wondeful food and a lovely nights sleep. When talking later to the new manager about my previous night. She told me, she knew all about that place....!

Just loved the TA a horrible experience which is a TA from a couple not two seperate people as they would have you belive.

The people in question booked two nights and the gentleman tried to pay with a credit card that was refused twice.
They then paid with a card that the female produced a total of £60 for two nights in a en-suite room this included tea and coffee making and Sky TV .
We have a departure time from the rooms of 10.30am ,at 12.30pm they came down from their room and stated that they had to get back to the mainland and wanted a refund for the second day.
I explained that the chambermaids had finished for the dayso we couldnt make the room up and relet it if they had come down earlier before 10.30 we may have been able to refund ,with this I was regaled with a torrent of abuse from the female and of course threatened with a bad report on TA.

Why you may ask your selves have I taken so long to put this right ,well as we have just won the highly respected award BEST BAR NONE we felt it was time to put our side .

Whatever you do don't stay there - but if you have too - definitely don't think you're making the better choice by paying a few pounds more for the ensuite room - you're not - this means that the communal loo and bathroom, which are opposite this room - are visited all night long by the other occupants with slamming doors on either end of the corridor to reach this landing and then further slamming doors to the bathrooms with flushing of loos and running water and creaking of floorboards going on all throught the night. I didn't sleep a wink. The manager categorically told us we weren't getting a refund - we stupidly paid for 2 nights in advance - when we came to chat to him before even asking for one - and then turned his back and walked away - very unprofessional and very rude. We checked into the Castle hotel in Ryde for only a few punds more and had one of the best nights and had a room with a view that looked all the way back over the channel to England - so I laid back on my bed and thought of it.
