“Tranquil, comfortable and so enjoyable”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2012

Rooms reserved online with some reservations! Some online reviews had been critical but now it is difficult to see why. Each of our three rooms were splendid, service unobtrusive but fun, professional and efficient.Food so much better than some reviews had suggested..in fact really very good by any standard. Beautiful grounds, private beach, relaxing resident's areas, Priory Bay exceeded even our higher hopes and expectations.

We stayed in one of the luxury yurts at the Priory Bay Hotel that are put up in the summer and can thoroughly recommend it. Spent the evening sat on the yurt's deck over looking the sea, watching red squirrels run around the trees. The staff were really welcoming and on hand if we needed anything, but otherwise left us to enjoy the quirky, fun, romantic escape.

We stayed at the Priory Bay Hotel for two nights earlier this week. Despite feeling like we might have lowered the average age of the clientele by a couple of decades we had a brilliant time. We stayed in the yurt that overlooked the hotel's own private beach. Beautifully decorated room, lovely bathroom with a roll-top bath, little balcony that was perfect for sipping champagne on in the afternoon... the ladies who run the yurts were really friendly. We watched red squirrels playing in the trees, played croquet and boules on the main hotel lawn, and decided the eat in the hotel restaurant (Priory Oyster Bar & Grill) as the food and service were excellent (decor in there so-so, but food more than made up for it). Breakfasts were great too - good selection on the help-yourself table and full English breakfasts available. Obviously it helped that the weather was absolutely beautiful, but we will definitely be visiting again.

We lunched there with some friends of ours who live on the island. We didn't go to the Priory as our first choice but were very pleasantly surprised . At first sight the dining room seemed a bit tired but the food and service was excellent. The risotto was excellent and my husband's salmon fishcake probably the best fishcake he has ever eaten. We just had one course each and it was just right. We then went into the drawing room for coffee. This is a fabulous room - as other reviewers have said it is just the place to curl up with a book. There were excellent magazines on offer and we could all have wiled away the afternoon. The afternoon tea menu looked excellent and we plan on going back soon.

Husband booked for my birthday lunch, ordered the Sunday roast. Most disappointing as all the food was, at best, luke warm, even the gravy! After complaining they removed plates to do a 'microwave job' on it (which didn't enhance the meat) and proceeded to put horseradish on the lamb and mint on the beef. Having pointed this out to the waiter he decided to argue with me.

Left in tears and went home (we are locals) for a scratched cheese and biscuits lunch....

We will NOT return to The Priory, or recommended to friends and neighbours.

We stayed here about 18 months ago before New Year and had a memorable time but this visit was even better! We were in room 6 which is huge and almost triple aspect with window seats looking out to the sea over the top of the pretty wood ,down to the garden with the sitting statues of Churchill and Roosevelt and the attractive ruin with the golf course in the background. The room is light, extremely comfortable and comforting almost evocative of Edwardian times. There are thoughtful touches-kettle, teapot and cups, bottled water, writing desk in one of the windows, ironing board, a sofa. I enjoyed sitting on one of the window seats just looking out to sea.
The bathroom is fine but could be updated- but the bedroom was so fantastic we did not care. There are more modern rooms and bathrooms if you prefer. We had drinks in the huge sitting room-you almost feel that Poirot is about to appear.
What makes this place stand out however is not only the comfort and atmospheric reception rooms but the particularly nice staff and, essentially, superb food with a good fairly priced wine list.
Unfortunately we could not eat in the island room restaurant as it was due to be laid up for a wedding breakfast but our meal was delicious in the oyster bar restaurant and we had the choice of both menus. The service was friendly, efficient and we were not rushed nor did we have to wait. The puddings were of particular note. The kitchen make full use of fresh produce with some beautiful flavours and combinations.
The following morning after breakfast (best scrambled egg!) we walked down through the pretty woods with the primroses and wild garlic to the beautiful sandy beach and along the foreshore towards Bembridge.
There is a huge appeal in taking the ferry to the island as you feel you are off on holiday-much better than sitting in hours of traffic going down to the west country! We will be back hopefully soon!

The hotel is in a prime position in its own grounds near the beach. Staff are friendly, public rooms light and spacious. We stayed one night and eat in the Oyster bar restaurant. The starters arrived promptly and were fine. The meal was let down by the poor main courses. The steak was small and rather chewy, the fish pie was mostly vegetable with a small amount of fish and the fish main course small and forgettable. The hotel charges premium prices for its food so it needs to raise its game.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms where you can hear the water pumps start up in the night - staff can advise which to cho...
