It was so interesting to see yet another smock mill on our tour of Kent and this one dating from 1789.A smock mill was a windmill with 6 or 8 sloping sides with a roof/cap which rotated. This one was powered by wind then steam but not since 1980, we learned.Their base was usually stone or brick as the wood would rot.Later we saw one in Margate,Kent.

Travelling around Herne Bay the Wind Mill is easily seen and looks amazing in the summer against a blue sky. It is open to the public but only on certain days at certain months of the year so if you want to visit the inside of the Mill you need to check its opening times. That said, I visited out of season, so although I couldn't go inside, you are able to view the Mill and take some lovely photos anyway from the outside. Out of season this is free, in season there is a small charge to go inside but the cost is minimal. Well worth a visit, very informative and such a beautiful Wind Mill, one of the best in Kent I would say.

Thank you for your lovely review Carol. Lovely to hear the Mill is enjoyed even during the months it is closed to the public. Not long until we are open again for the 2016 season - we hope to see you then for a tour inside Herne Mill.
Thanks again.
