“Met our (modest) needs entirely”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

We were just after somewhere to sleep for one night whilst visiting Yorkshire and this Premier Inn proved to be a perfectly acceptable and economical solution. As other reviewers have noted, it is located in a service area just off the A64 but we were fully aware of this when we booked and were not fazed by this on arrival. If, however, you are expecting the hotel to be in a picturesque historical location you are going to be very, very disappointed!! The location is quite convenient for the lovely city of York and you can drive to the centre of York in less than 15 minutes.

Check in was extremely friendly, welcoming and efficient and our room appeared newly renovated with the 'normal' Premier Inn furniture, a comfortable bed, and a large flatscreen TV. Both the room and bathroom were extremely clean.

Luckily, our room was located towards the end of the building furthest from the main road and, although we could still hear the traffic noise, it wasn't especially intrusive. We slept soundly until early the next morning when the person in the room above us took to stamping around their room with enough vigour to make the light fittings on our ceiling vibrate loudly and wake us up (not PI's fault!).

We didn't eat at the hotel as we were dining with friends in York but the in-house restaurant appeared bright and welcoming.

For clean, comfortable accomodation at a very reasonable price the Premier Inn York South West certainly did not disappoint.

Room Tip: Try to get a room furthest from the main road

We stay at this inn as we wanted to vist York.It was well placed to do this with a park and ride 10min's away. The food was of a good standed and served hot The breakfast was outstanding you could have as much as you wanted. All the staff were attentive and friendly. As we stayed here for 3 days we asked for a extra armchair in our room. no problem it was there within 10 min's.Our room was kept clean, well done to the housekeeping staff. If there was one problem it is that the water pressure on the top floor is very pour and this needs to be sorted.

Following a recent review about staff friendliness on trip advisor, i was able to monitor the staff over 3 days. I have to say well done, the staff in the bar anrd resturant were attentive, cleared breakfast plates, not allowing them to stack up. Everyone was trying really hard to be friendly, Well done. Cleanliness throughout was excellent. The hotel is only a couple of miles from the park and ride, for daytime visits to York, and the Esplanade car park in the city right by the river after 6pm is £2 all evening

Room Tip: rooms furthest from reception are the quietist

The bed in our room, number 52, was lumpy with some springs digging in my ribs. Poor quality cheap pillows did not help towards a good night’s sleep either.

My wife and I paid for the 3 course meal and breakfast deal. My starter was a solid hard mass of dried out overcooked pastry with some sort of nasty duck gloop inside, and was most unpalatable. The rump steak I ordered as medium rare came, but more than half of it I could not eat as it was full of gristle. It took some cutting because of the toughness of the meat. I just gave up in the end!
We were tired and It was far too late to go out looking for a proper meal elsewhere!

My breakfast was very good and well up to the standards I was expecting. Unfortunately my wife’s meal was cold and the poached egg solid, possibly because the cook waited to get her meal and mine out at the same time! She didn't tell me at the time because of the state of my meal the previous night my lack of sleep.
I was too tired and busy to complain that night and needed to leave early the next morning.

The counter staff were friendly and very helpful throughout our overnight stay. The waiter (at dinner) moved us from a cold draughty table to a warmer one after some protestation on our part. If he had not done so I would have left the restaurant, but he was attentive and pleasant at all times.

I will probably not be using Premier Inns again unless I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I certainly would not order an evening meal.

This was a great hotel for our family of 4 visiting York. It had just been updated (the smell of paint was still in the air), clean and tidy. The reception staff were welcoming and, on the night we ate in the restaurant, was tasty and hot. It was easy to find and close to the Park and Ride station

The only reason we do not give it a rating of 5 is because of the breakfast experience we encountered on check-out morning. The staff were very put out that we didn't book breakfast - although we were assured by reception that it wouldn't be a problem. Although not particularly busy, it took 25 mins for our order to be taken and another 30 to 40 mins before it was placed on the table - with items missing on the orders. There was no apology.

It was a shame because the rest of our stay was great up until that point.

We stayed here with our two young children while visiting York for two days. It was four or five miles out of York but there is a park and ride a couple of miles away, free parking £2.50 per adult return and children free so this saved on parking costs and the hassle of finding somewhere to park in the centre. The rooms were clean and modern, the beds very comfy. The staff very friendly and helpful, breakfast was wonderful, we were full for most of the day. Would definately stay here again.
