A very disappointing stay.
We arrived quite late after attending a wedding. The poor person behind the counter in reception seemed a little bit worked up by the number of people arriving so late, even though he told us that there were at least three weddings that day and that it is a regular occurrence for it to be that busy. Perhaps, they should be used to this or have an extra person, especially if they were expecting it!
When we got to the point where he could check us in, the person at reception disappeared for a bit and said that he just needed to check something with our room. When he returned, he said it was fun but he just had to check that it had been cleaned (at about 1am!).
When we arrived at the room, it did look clean but had an extremely strong smell of smoke. We went back to reception to explain and were told that he didn’t really know what to do because the hotel was full. He said that he couldn’t change our room so we felt a bit stuck on what to do next. As I didn’t want everything to smell or smoke etc, I asked if they had any air fresheners or anything we could use to clean it. He went to check but couldn’t find anything!
Eventually, he noticed on the system that another couple hadn’t turned up yet so he gave us their room and said that, if they did turn up, he would worry about it then. A bit or a worry since we were also told that, by doing this, we were receiving an upgrade!
Luckily, our new room didn’t smell or smoke. It was very basic and in need of updating but there was no smoke smell!
The next day, breakfast was very busy so we had to sit outside the restaurant to eat. This wasn’t a problem as it was much quieter than the restaurant. The breakfast was okay, especially considering our expectations after the night before. Surprisingly, the mashed up hash browns were probably one of the best bits. There wasn’t much selection at breakfast but, thankfully, we didn’t pay any extra for it so we just had some odd bits to get us set up for the day.
When we checked out, we were asked by a new person at reception how our stay was so we explained about the night before. He said that he was really puzzled by it because he went in and couldn’t smell anything, even though he is a smoker himself. He also said that the person staying in the room the night before was a member of staff who doesn’t smoke or drink and they didn’t mention anything to anyone about a smell. He did apologise though.
Overall, the stay was pretty average. The grand entrance gives the impression that it’s going well o be a lovely hotel but, in reality, it needs a lot of work both in updating the hotel and with customer service. It has a bit of a Travel Lodge vibe but with a smell of smoke. Unfortunately, we won’t be staying here again and are currently wondering if all Mecure hotels are like this.
