Upon arrival the lady in charge had no idea. Customers were helping themselves behind the bar, serving each other but would not serve us!! She didn't know we were booked in, we were offered the wrong accommodation. The double room consisted of two single beds of different height and length being put together with a sheet and duvet over the top. The mattresses were ready for the tip. The wall paper was coming off the walls. The bathroom was not built for large people. The wall paper was coming off the walls. The toilet, wash hand basin and shower were operated via a macerator unit which switches on and off when you flush the toilet, run the hand basin, have a shower or at any other time it likes. The towels were just larger than hand towels. No where to hang the towels to dry - let alone hand them up in the bathroom. No where to put toiletries - other than perhaps the floor. Breakfast was offered at 9.30a.m. at 9.15 a.m. there was a knock on the door to say she did not wish to keep the breakfast 'warm' for too long. The full English was almost inedible - fried egg absolutely solid, toast - cold and hard, sausage - the cheapest that could be bought. It is the first time I have been served Black Pudding with the plastic outside still on. In fairness the lady said that she did not understand black pudding. The evening meal was of a similar standard.
Don't do it to yourself - you deserve better!!

We arrived on Friday 7th July 2017 for a 3 night stay at the campsite, we wanted to camp here because of its proximity to Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Castle. The site is small and the facilities are basic, but they are very clean and they work, the site very kindly supply wooden chocks to level up our campervan, so once connected to the electric hookup and levelled we went for a drink in the pub. Suzy the landlady couldn’t do enough for us, when we arrived, it was the day before the 3rd Rugby Test Match between the British Lions and the All Blacks, and we asked if there was anywhere with Sky sports where we could watch the game the next day, Suzy said that the pub had Sky Sports and agreed to open the pub from 8:15am on Saturday so that we could watch the match, not only that but Suzy also cooked us a very nice full English Breakfast which we ate during the game, what great service!!! The Pub is very friendly with lovely staff, great locals and good pub grub. There is about a 15 minute walk into the town of Alnwick, the walk back is a little more challenging as the Shepherds Rest is at the top of a hill. Overall, because of the friendliness of the Pub, and the proximity to Alnwick, we will definitely be camping there again.

We booked a stay at The Shepherds Rest over the Easter weekend in our campervan and we were not disappointed. The service was first class, nice site, nice pub with very good meals at reasonable prices and very friendly people. The site owner could not have been more helpful and even offered us a lift into Alnwick. We will definitely be booking again because it was "top notch". Hopefully, with better weather next time.
