“This is an absolute gem of a hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2011

From the moment we arrived we knew this hotel was special - the comments in the Guest Book said it all! Our room was spacious and had beautiful antique furniture. The bed was supremely comfortable and the thick fluffy white towels and bathrobes a delight. The fresh fruit and flowers were a nice extra touch. In fact the standard of housekeeping throughout the hotel was very high. The fabulous food was complemented by stunning panoramic views and spectacular sunsets from the dining room windows. The service and hospitality offered by Tim and Anne Riley was outstanding and such a welcome change from those bland corporate hotels we have sometimes stayed in......we just can't wait to return!

Tim and Anne Riley run a first class hotel to a very high standard. The hotel is beautifully situated overlooking Porlock and the sea. The rooms are large and beautifully furnished.
What impresses most is the standard of presentation and cleanliness.
Breakfast is served to your table, which makes a change from the usual hotel serve yourself buffet breakfasts.
Will definitely go back when we have the chance.

Room Tip: All the rooms have sea views.

This is a lovely hotel combining modern amenities with traditional values and lots of lovely finishing touches - eg putting fresh milk in with tea making equipment each night, when they turn down the bed. The whole place is spotless and Tim and Anne are wonderful hosts - nothing at all is too much trouble. Bed was really comfortable and room had sofa from which to gaze at the lovely seaview. I strongly recommend this hotel and will definitely be back!

Room Tip: All the rooms have a seaview.

The pillows were feather and down (a miracle in itself!) and very new and fresh. Our room was large, comfy with armchairs, tv etc. and very cosy with an excellent en-suite having both shower/bath etc. Wonderful views over the Porlock Bay from the bedroom. Service was excellent, and nothing seemed to be to much trouble for Anne and Tim the owners, and my gluten-free diet was no problem ( wonderful lemon/raspberry roulade). Many choices for breakfast and the evening meals were prepared by the owner Anne and were just delicious!!
Public rooms had cozy log fires, fresh flowers and lots of wood panelling, and a small discreet bar for the evenings. You half expected Poirot or Miss Marple to appear at any moment!
Came away feeling calm, relaxed and pampered.
Also much fitter, after all the walking by the beach and on the beautiful Exmoor hills.
We are definitely staying again.

Room Tip: just take your walking boots.

Ive never reveiwed before and the following may sound like a euology but the Oaks in Porlock deserves it! We've had two holidays at the Oaks now and we couldn't name another hotel that offers so much from stylish dining with wonderful views to boot and clothes drying when the Exmoor weather gets going! Tim and Anne think of everything with welcoming home made cake, tea and coffee at the end of a long day sightseeing or walking to the sumptuous bath towels and robes in the glorious bathrooms, each one with bath AND shower for perfect coupledom! Lovely bedrooms with polished period furniture, huge beds that you want to take home with you and the food is wonderful every evening with a full menu of local produce and perfect puddings! Beds are turned down with chocolates on the pillow. I'd say more but would spoil all the surprises and personal touches provided by the owners Tim and Anne Riley

We have been visiting The Oaks each year for the past 7 or 8 years with various family members and friends and each time nobody wants to leave. Nothing is too much trouble for Tim & Anne and everything about the place is perfect. The rooms are fabulous, a good size with great bathrooms and a huge attention to detail such as fresh flowers, biscuits, fruit and a chocolate on your pillow at night! The beds are really comfortable and I always get a good nights sleep here.

The food is to die for. A variety of choice each night. I don't know how Tim & Anne do it, the food is just heavenly from the melba toasts & homemade rolls on the table and the fish course after your starter to the ever changing selection of perfectly cooked vegetables through to the melt in your mouth puddings followed by the coffee and the homemade chocolates which slip down a treat! (marzipans are my favourite!) Words cannot describe how good the food is here! Breakfast is great too!

The location of The Oaks is perfect for doing your bit for the local economy in the village and for getting out and about on Exmoor! I look forward to my trip to The Oaks each year, I simply cannot fault it! I have a stressful job and as soon as I arrive the ticking clocks and the relaxing atmosphere have a calming effect on me!

  • Liked — The food, location and everything about the hotel itself
  • Disliked — Having to leave!

Our first visit to The Oaks was our honeymoon in 1964. It was special then, in a beautiful setting and the service was good. The cost then was, for a week, 10 Guineas with a reduction for honeymoon couples of 10 shillings.
We decided to return in 2004 for our Ruby Anniversary and found the outside of the hotel looked the same. However the inside had dramatically changed. The rooms, now all en-suite, had been enlarged to resemble small suites traditionally furnished for the comfort of the guests. Fresh fruit, flowers and bottled water were provided every day.
The entrance hall-snug and the lounge had real open fires. A well stocked bar and comfortable seating welcomed us as we returned from our days out.
The food was excellent, freshly cooked using locally sourced products.
Obviously costs have substantially increased in forty years but a stay here is still good value for money. The hosts, Tim and Ann will go out of their way to welcome you and ensure that your stay will long be remembered.
