“Fascinating ”

Guthrie Scottish Rite
Reviewed May 10, 2017 via mobile

My friend and I were curious about this place so we decided to take a guided tour. The tour lasted at least an hour and was only $5 per person. You cannot take an unguided tour. Our tour guide was a longtime Mason and very knowledgeable about the building and their organization. This massive building is like something you would see in Washington, DC. Many of the rooms still have all the original pieces in tact, even though the building is still utilized today. The architecture is beautiful, along with the stained glass windows. I am not familiar with this organization at all, so I was very intrigued by it. If you're visiting the Guthrie area and you're interested in the history of the Scottish Rites there, you would enjoy taking this tour.

Obtaining information was somewhat confusing as some reference the structure as a "Masonic Temple" some Guthrie Scottish Rite and some Scottish Rite Temple. With that said this "attraction" presents very interesting architecture, furnishings and history. No self-guided tours; guided tours are 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at $5/person. Initially we and others thought the building was closed until we realized that a door to the right of the main front doors was open and led to the office area. While the outside is immense, the interior and furnishings are much more. Guthrie is located about 20 - 30 minutes north of Oklahoma City and well worth the visit.

I am a Mason. In fact, I now possess every masonic degree attainable except one. I love this temple. I know the history behind the building. The architecture in the building is phenomenal. This place is a must see for Masons and given its history it should be a must see for all Oklahomans. There are tours available but call first and make sure they are accessible on the day you plan. Not sure if today's "kids" will appreciate it but history buffs will.
