There are 6 or 7 motels in John Day, only three of which we found on TripAdvisor. Most seem to be run down and/or aging with the exception of the Best Western. We just needed a place to lay our heads for the night, and the room was clean and the price was right at $50 less than the BW. The proprietor was friendly and helpful, but be prepared for a room that appears to have not changed in the last half century, other than a wood-look laminate in the bed area. The only real disappointment for us was the drastic temperature change of the shower from scalding hot to cold whenever the room next to us used their shower or sink. The highlight is a great family restaurant, The Outpost, that can be accessed from across the parking lot, and a charming century-old church at the corner that is very picturesque.

After a long day of driving, it was good to pull into John Day and check into the Dreamer's Lodge. This is your basic, small town, 60's type place, but the manager was very friendly and helped us find the best steak we have ever eaten at the nearby Grubsteak Mining restaurant. The room was very clean and well stocked. It was nice that you could even grab a free magazine or two in the lobby to read if there was nothing on the tv that night.

Stayed the night here as we were passing through this area. Good value. Very clean. Friendly service. Microwave, fridge, free wifi. Just what we needed to stop, recharge & regroup without paying for a bunch of amenities we wouldn't use. The rooms are a bit out of date but in good repair. It was quiet and made for a comfortable sleep. I would stay here again

Very friendly and helpful staff. Yes, we would stay here again if in the area. Smallish hotel but clean. We had no problems. Good air conditioning. Fridge and microwave. Stayed upstairs in Room 33. Directly across the parking lot is the back entrance to a restaurant that we ate at several times. It opens EVERY DAY at 530am.

Stopped in John Day without a reservation, and started at the Beat Western. They wanted $188 (over $200 with tax)! What???? It's a MOTEL in John Day. We just wanted a clean overnight, didn't need the pool, so we went to Dreamers. $89 for a king room, very clean, small fridge, microwave, super nice owner. For the extra $100 we are saving we'll buy breakfast. This hotel is a great value and more than adequate for a night (or two). We are still in shock over Best Western's price for probably a very similar room

Room Tip: We asked for the upper floor... you never know if you end up with loud upstairs neighbors!
