Owner description: Considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty in all four seasons. In 2016 and 2017 the Garden is undergoing a major expansion project which will add a Cultural Village -- complete with classroom, exhibition, and gallery space and an authentic Japanese Tea Cafe -- outside the original Garden's gates.

“Tranquility in the city”

What a beautiful serene place to stroll and relax. Gorgeous views of the city (and probably mountains too if the clouds would clear).

“Mossy greens and twigs”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2012

I picked a sunny day to enjoy the moss, stones and bare trees. It must look entirely different in the summer.

Good to know--there is parking at the base of the hill with a zig-zagging path up the hill to the entrance. They have a shuttle there to take people that can't or don't care to make the short climb. There is a steeper section of the garden that is not accessible for wheel chairs or strollers and has a choice of a one-way stone stairway to leave by that has rocks set unevenly that would be a challenge to anyone that is unstable walking.

“Awesome..... a must see and do attraction!!!”

Whether you are visiting, or live in the area. Don't miss a trip to the Japanese Garden, as it is amazing... But beware, there is some walking and some grades and stairs involved.

“Great year round, but best in the fall”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2012

In the spring, when the irises and rhododendrons bloom, and in the fall, with the turn of the leaves on the red Japanese maples, are the two best times of year to visit. Then the colors accent the arboreal subtleties. Although the gardens are a visual experience, wending textured trails through sculpted woods, be sure to listen closely. Away from the noise of the city, your ears become attuned to quieter sounds, like the babbling of the little creeks, and the gentle tripping of the bamboo water feature...

“A must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

Best way to get there is the MAX and hope on the shuttle which is right outside the elevator doors. Go back to the city center on the bus which drives through a great Portland neighborhood
