Pioneer Place is easily accessible in downtown. We parked in a nearby garage and walked all over downtown. The shops in Pioneer Place were nice and some stores are upscale. Good variety of shops as well.

I've lived all my life in the Pacific NW and have many fond memories of shopping, walking and working in downtown Portland, Oregon, but something has happened in the last 5 years or so. This is no longer a fun place to go. It's really quite depressing. Most of the shops in Pioneer Place have left leaving only the bottom floor with a few stores. We recently walked from the new Apple Store on 5th down to the Pine Street Market. It's was really depressing to see how many empty buildings there are. The City is also extremely dirty. It used to be you only really saw a lot of homeless people down around Burnside and Old Town. Now they are everywhere. Every block we walked on smelled like urine. Portland seems to be proud of their slogan "keep Portland weird" but if by weird they mean dirty and dangerous, then they can keep it. I was in downtown Seattle recently and at least it was clean and vibrant. It felt like Portland once did many years ago. The Mayor and other public figures really need to do something if they want visitors to come to Portland again, because I'm hearing this sentiment from more and more people who say they no longer go over to Portland from Vancouver, WA any more. Really SAD. For visitors who want to do some shopping, I suggest you head a little South of the City to Bridgeport Village. It's clean, friendly and there are lots of shops and restaurants.

The Pioneer Place shopping mall/center seemed pretty compact and limited in its selection of stores. Much of this is because the nicer brands have stand alone storefronts near Pioneer Square. It's also a bit weird that the mall is split across an intersection and you have to cross a bridge to get to each side. In any case it offers an escape from rain or heat and is conveniently located.

We visited on two occasions whilst in the City, it really is very conveniently placed, with many of the transport hubs close by. We are not great shoppers, but there are a number of well known, high quality outlets within the central building plus the cinema on the upper floor. Looking at the overall complex with other nearby buildings, the Apple Store proved most useful and this is next to a similar store for the Microsoft users. There is a very good Starbucks outlet on the junction that we used and a number of alternate food options to cater for all tastes.

I took the MAX here from Lloyd Center. I was expecting a large mall with more things to do. Definitely not what I expected. It's a small mall with 4 levels but each level is relatively small.

Only positive was the opportunity to walk downtown Portland.
