I had a chance to to extend my stay in Portland after a trade show and decided spend the last two days at the Avalon. The service from start to finish was nothing short of excellent. The staff are all well trained, courteous, efficient and genuinely friendly. Check-in was seemless. The river view room was spacious and comfortable. The european tilt-in door provides just the right amount of ventilation when just have to have some fresh air. The bathroom was spaceous as well; the large sink top and upper shelf provide plenty of room to spread out all of your toiletries. Julie Andrews could have spun herself around just like she did in the Sound of Music and never touch a wall in this bathroom. Each floor has its own continental breakfast station directly across from the elevator; it makes so much sense I don't know why more hotels don't do this. What could be more decadent than to be able to walk around a hotel in your bathrobe any time of day and nobody gives it a second thought. The service at the Spa was equal to the hotel. The facility is well designed and spa treatments met my expectations. The valet parking is well run and efficient. Although the Avalon is not in heart of the downtown, it is very easy to access from I-5. I will be returning to Portland in the future and when I do, I will be staying at the Avalon.

Room Tip: The river view is worth the added expense. If you are above average in height or weight bring your o...

OK let's start with the good. We got a great deal through living social that included a discount on spa services,2 drink vouchers, free parking (normally $20 per night) and a gift card to the restaurant on the property. The valet was very helpful and kind. He loaded our bags onto a luggage cart and escorted us to the front desk. The staff checking us in were very friendly and helpful. Our room was on the 4th floor with a view of the river. Please note that in the summer when the trees have leaves...you probably wont have a full river view. The room was comfortable with 2 club chairs and an ottoman. The bed was comfortable and clean. The bathroom had both a tub and a shower. The towels we large and fluffy.
For the bad stuff...the door in our room leading to the balcony was broken and we were concerned that it was about to fall off the one hinge that was attached. Room service was a bit slow and the food was just ok. The waitperson had forgotten a bottle opener for the beer and quickly went and brought one back to us. She was very nice and polite. The balconies are separated by nylon partitions..not a big deal to us...but not super private if that is a concern for you. The items that really stood out to us were the electronics....VERY spotty wifi reception, the TV was a very old model and the picture was just barely ok. The "clock radio" was spotty for reception as well.
We did take advantage of the spa and the spa is lovely. Separate areas for men and women. That included dry sauna, steam and a hot tub..there were cool towels available along with other toiletries. There was also a quiet room with plenty of magazines, cold fruit infused water or herbal teas as well as some fruit. You are given spa robes and shoes for your time in the spa and they were fine. The massages were wonderul and both my sweetie and I enjoyed them. We both had wonderful therapists who took time up front to find out what we wanted from our appts. Fabulous... upon checkout we did have a bit of an issue using a US Bank gift card. However, the spa manager was wonderful and told us not to worry about it that she would either call the credit clearing company and work it out or run it through the lobbies credit clearing device. So we felt that she handled the matter beautifully.
We then went to the restaurant later that evening for dinner. Each and every person in the restaurant was wonderful to talk with and very helpful. Our waiter was especially wonderful. We had an amazing meal and with a fabulous Pinot Noir (based on the waiters rec). We did not finish our wine and it was packed up for us to take back to our room and enjoy. It was such a fun and delicious experience. We did not make the continental breakfast the next morning so I can not comment on that. There was Tully's Coffee in the room which was very good. We also did not get a chance to try the Sunday Brunch. Check out was a breeze and the valet again helped us with luggage and gave us a rec for a breakfast place. All in all we had a pleasant stay and would consider staying here in the future.
As a last note, we know the Portland area well and knew the location of this hotel was not directly downtown so that was not an issue for us.

Nice location by the river if all you want is peace and quiet. Once there, you can have the valet park your car and never leave if all you want is to have down time. There is a bar/restaurant located 30 yards from the front door. The Aquariva. It's not your traditional dining experience being that every course is is ordered separately and charged separately. This can get very spendy if you don't watch what you're doing. The drinks are a little on the high end of the price scale as well.Service could be a little quicker but it wasn't that bad. The staff throughout our stay was great, from the restaurant to the valet to even house keeping. The rooms are a decent size and we had a view of the river which was very nice. The rooms need a few little upgrades but nothing major. (Tube TV) The spa is on site. Make sure you make reservations early if planning to use the spa it fills up fast! Be prepared. Trying to find the place can be a bit tricky. It has a rediculous address and most GPSes can not find the place so they give out the address to a building near the hotel. We would stay again but only with an online discount or something simular. At full price I don't think it's worth it. If you don't plan on staying there and only there then stay some place else. It is WAY off the beaten path from any entertainment options that Portland has to offer.

Room Tip: Riverview is awesome in the daytime. At night, there's little to see.

First, let me say that Avalon had some of the nicest and most pleasant staff I've ever met in a hotel. The front desk staff and the valets were polite, and tried their best to meet every guest's needs.

Now, let's talk about the hotel. The building is one of the most poorly-built hotels I've ever stayed in - the walls in the rooms are paper-thin: it sounded like we were staying in a college dorm! Not only could we clearly hear the conversations taking place in all of our neighbors' rooms, there was rap music and loud girls talking in the hallway. A call to the front desk resulted in the front desk clerk trying the best she could to quiet the several rooms of perpetrators down, but that did little good.

Next door is the Aquariva restaurant and a gift certificate was part of our package. The layout of tables is cramped. My fiancee and I were stuck in an awkward location with other tables all around us - privacy was definitely not something we could expect. The service was okay though we were seated for 15 minutes before we saw our waitress, and the restaurant was not remotely busy. The menu was gourmet, but the dishes tasted underseasoned and pretty dry.

Overall, we really enjoyed the people who work for Avalon Hotel and Aquariva, but the structures and food leave too much to be desired for the price. We can't recommend either location.

I was going to Portland to visit my boyfriend, he broke up with me two days prior, via text, needless to say I was not in a good place, but I had my flight, time off so I went anyway and stayed at the Avalon. I was prepared for a weekend of tears and feeling sorry for myself but one night at the restaurant bar meeting Shay and Ben changed all that. They were kind, funny, inspirational, they made what was otherwise a sad time for me a very positive experience. I was reminded of what it's all about, what matters, they completely turned the week around for me. No more tears, onward and upward, because of Shay and Ben I left feeling energized and ready to get back to better opportunities. Blessings to Shay and Ben from the 40something from Los Angeles :)

Room Tip: the suites have a private balcony other rooms are a shared balcony

We stayed at the Avalon overlooking the Willamette River, we upgraded to a River view with no additional charge. The price was good, we got the government rate at $113.00/night. The room was small, but cozy with a nice view of the river. The spa was outstanding and use of the facilities was included with the room as was the gym. The spa was well equiped with whirlpool and steam sauna, both of which were clean & well maintained.

The location is convinient to downtown Portland. The only downside to the hotel is they charge $20.00/night for valet parking or you can try to find parking on the street.

Well worth the price, we were very satisfied.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade to the Riverside views at no additional charge
