We have beef enchiladas and tacos. The shredded beef is simmering in its juices and the food is serve cafeteria style. Your eyes will behold so many choices, you will have a difficult time deciding what to eat.

Do not let the cover of this book fool you. This is the best Mexican food I have ever eaten in the US, The pork and nopale stew was fantastic. The aqua freesias were incredibly refreshing. If the nopale salad is available, do try it-you will not be sorry. This is a wonderful restaurant. Free samples are available. Everyone was extremely friendly and gracious.

It is a cafeteria style service where all of the food is laid out in front of you to choice.
The favors and spices will excite your appetite!

I have been frequenting this place for the last four or so years but this is my first review. The food is always wonderful. So much so that I usually get a days worth of food to go for my family (we have five people). The food is always fresh. I do not have a favorite because in my opinion everything they make here is good.

Hardworking family putting smiles on visiting patrons with every Bite! Mario the owner, has a big personality, warm and endearing giving all kind of suggestions on best ways to warm and reserve leftovers and in-house goods, his Spanish speaking Mom runs the register and takes care of customers; very sweet lady, while Pop runs around; they're just having fun serving the hungry on the other side of the hot cases displaying their labors of love -- carnitas with nopales/cactus, mole, pollo rojo, chile rellenos, guisado/meat stew, Big 7"x2" tamales,++, home made tortillas (you'll hear the conveyer belt gently cranking them out ;), fresh salsa bar with tortilla chips yum, in-house bakery and grocery store where there are stacks of the fresh made tortillas to go!!

De Leon's is rock solid deliciousness! Don't miss your chance to taste a lot of Mexico in East Portland! We devoured a plate of $9.99 carnitas tamales (comes with 2), frijoles negros and arroz, topped with the excellent fresh salsas in the bar. Lots of bottled-in-Mexico sodas that use real cane sugar and we picked up a dozen bag of day old tamales for $12! Outstanding flavor and value, particularly memorable were the black beans, not too thick or thin, and packed full of flavor.

If that weren't enough Mario hits us up with a giant skyscraper tall loaf of cornbread on the house, citing it good enough to eat by itself like a dessert with no butter, honey, etc. We savored the pillowy height of the crumb, delicate sweetness; he was right except it was so good solo yet we decided it best to enjoy the rest at home with espresso.

Mario's son gets in on the family action, as a gifted artist (Instagram him: 10year) adding his signature/a mural, an inspiring tribute to the lives of his migrant parents: tomatoes with '77 (the year his parents moved to Indiana to pick tomatoes), the cabbage patch (a move Buffalo NY to harvest cabbages) to the '163rd' green street sign and iconic 'PORTLAND' sign where his parents have landed in 1999, the Tortilleria now home.

Wait, there's a sister in the business too! She has her own line of fresh salsas--nopales, habanero, rojo, mango, pico, Salsas Locas (the other mural) very unusual since it was my first with baby nopales (yes sample it in the Deli's salsa bar); find them here in its own refrigerator or at New Seasons markets.

This East side mogul has even made it to TV with a Cooking Channel/Food Network Chef Aaron Sanchez segment to capture his empire of goodness, and Mario has also catered for a Rachel Ray crew.

Not impressed by all of this? Come check it out for yourself and you too will begin your rave and crave for all things Tortelleria de Leon :D
