We stayed for three nights, along with 9 other members of our extended family. The staff was friendly and attentive to our needs, the hotel was clean, and the pool area was really wonderful after a long day at Hershey Park. They are just finishing up an extensive renovation. They have done a beautiful job, and the work still going on was not disruptive at all. The rooms are a bit smaller than newer hotels, but they were fine for what we needed. The proximity to Hershey Park was fantastic. Also, the on-site restaurant was a pleasant surprise.

Even though we had reservations and arrived after the posted checkin time, the room was not ready. The floor was not vacuumed, there were fecal stains in the toilet bowl, and there were not enough towels and wash cloths for our party. The second night we didn't have enough towels again and even worse we had no wash cloths, the floor had not been vacuumed and yesterday's garbage was not removed. After two family members took showers, water from the shower apparently backed up into the sinks to overflowing. It took two calls and forty minutes before the night man responded. He had to call maintenance in from home. He arrived after eleven pm and banged and clanged until one am to rectify the problem. Since we had to be up at six am, we did not get much sleep. Nor did we get much satisfaction from management when we requested a refund. So future quests of HoJo Hershey be forewarned. I wished we had been.

This was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Employee Corey, in particular, was a very nasty person who hated his job. The hotel rooms and breakfast room were extremely dirty. Construction was being done in the early hours of the morning right outside our room door. Not a pleasant stay at all. You may be better off staying in your car.

We stayed one night at this establishment during the month of April 2009. We "upgraded" to a room that advertised flat panel TV and pillow top matresses. Upon entering the room, we noticed that TV was a conventional 19" set. This was room 17. The matresses were of the pillow top type . We notified management and they refunded the extra cost of the upgrade without any problems. The room itself was relatively clean. There was a stain on the carpet near the TV. HVAC systems worked fine and the mini-fridge in the room was cold upon arrival. Wireless internet was a bit difficult and slow. Our beds were quite comfortable, however the guests on the second floor above us were rather noisy until about 11pm and started right back up at 6am. I can't fault the hotel for that except for maybe some of the soundproofing may not be adequate.

The restuarant in the hotel seems rather nice. It was a bit pricey for our family of 4 so we didn't use it. We opted for the Hershey Pantry which was within walking distance.

Continental breakfast consisted of mostly cold items. The only warm items were coffee and toast. However, they continued to stock the breakfast well after the 10am cutoff. One downside note is that the breakfast is served in the game room which is a little cramped and noisy.

Overall, considereing the cost of lodging in Hershey, budget minded travelers will find the Howard Johnson an acceptable place to stay. Do bear in mind however, this is not the Ritz Carlton.
